Night Opener

Thanks to Fox Sports, the season-opener at the Coliseum will start at 7:15 p.m. The Oct. 27 game against Oregon kicks off at noon and the Oct. 6 game against Stanford will start at 4 p.m. and be televised on Versus. Or is it Vs. Hope you get that channel.

WTF is versus?

Versus used to OLN "Outdoor Life Network". This is where they now air most of hockey, and the Tour de France. How did the likely #1 team in the country get put on such a remote network that most people don't even have.

Versus?!!!!!!!!! Moves like this are cause for the "Pac-10 is a second tier conference" nonsense. Is Versus even on basic cable?!!! That's absurd that we're on that station.

Not exactly surprising, being as our Pac 10 commissioner is Tom Hansen. This guy has done about everything under his power to keep the Pac nationally under rated.

Versus? Games at Noon? Who swung these deals?

I would love to know how Versus got the USC vs Stanford game. USC is slotted to be on National Prime Time on ABC and ESPN in a number of games this coming season. I'm not sure how we got in the mix with Versus.

I actually dont mind the Opener being at 7:15 PM as it is tipically very hot in late August and early September. So a night game at that time of the year suits me fine.

The ruins will be lucky to be televised by Versus or anyone after they belly flop this September. But then, no one goes to the Rose Bowl to see them, so who cares if they're not on TV?

The only GOOD news to take from this is that this means these games will DEFINITELY be televised to us east coast Trojans without having to find a bar with College Gameplan.

Though I seriously doubt that a nationwide audience via the Vs. network is going to get better ratings than a regional ABC/College Gameplan broadcast would.

The problem with late games is that they almost guarantee that any casual east coast fans won't watch the game. 10:30 PM EST start times typically mean 1:30 AM end times. If I didn't love Trojan football, I know I wouldn't be tuning in past midnight to see the end. Forget about staying up that late to watch ANY other Pac-10 game. THAT's why the Pac-10 doesn't get any respect form the national media.

It's an easy explanation: Stanford. No network in the world would want to deal with the ratings dearth that would attend a televised Stanford game. ABC/ESPN/etc. would rather broadcast Oregon-ASU than a game including Stanford. Fortunately, this Central Time Trojan gets VS. (and I'm paying extra for the whole Fox Sports package just in case) so I'm all set.
