Ballet's great for balance. I was on the golf team when I was at SC and we never had courses like this to take.
What "real" subjects is he enrolled in this summer?
When? It's not on the USC Summer Class List.
Awe man Scott,
Why would you bust a guy out like that? geeze wiz... As if we have not lived down Leinarts Ball Room Dancing jokes..
Whoa!!!Whoa!!! Whoa!!! Wait one second here....You mean to tell me that "OUR" ol' buddy ol' pal "He's just Matty to me" Leinhart isn't taking just one more dance "class"??? I mean Wolfie usually you are pretty reliable with your facts, but this one I think you need to go back and double check to make sure this isn't "Matty" the TRANSPARENT one.....
Sounds like Leinhart is his idol.
For the record, ballet is offered during summer in the schedule of classes.

last time I checked, "Matt Leinhart" never went to USC. You would think after being in the public eye for 6 years people might spell his name right. Sorry but no one would be spelling Troy Aikman's name wrong, come on now
To be fair, Mustain has been enrolled in several summer school classes, with a dance class being just one of them. Leinart was ONLY taking ballroom dancing for his entire semester courseload, and he even took that as a pass/fail.
Many football and basketball players take dance classes to boost their GPAs every semester, but Leinart embarrassed the university by taking only ballroom dancing for his last semester and was bragging about it to the media.
Big difference in this case. By the time Mustain starts in 2008, no one will be talking about how he once took a ballet class over a year earlier along with a number of other more academically-inclined classes.
I guess Mustain doesn't mind wearing those tight ballet outfits. He would look great in those shoes. Does the school offer figure skating now as well?
Great way to meet good looking girls, don't you think?
Well, at least we get our weekly Mustain story from you, Scott!
I guess you have to make sure that no other player will ever have as many blog posts about them as Mustain has had on this blog.
Give the people what they want and the web hits will come...
All Mustain, all the time!
I don't know, I kinda like more Leinhart stories. What do you think NJTrojan?
It's going to be hilarious when Mustain destroys the Bruins in a year or two.
Then they will fire Dorrell since he couldn't beat a dude that took ballet lessons.
Not sure why anyone is ripping on Mustain for taking ballet. After all, Lynn Swann did it and he credits the ballet classes for helping him develop his incredible body control. If anything, I think more of the team could benefit from some ballet classes.
I don't even try anymore NJTrojan. You're just wasting your time.
Linehart, Lienhart, Leinhart. You say potato...I can't spell Leinart.
Oh and I'm sorry 28th Street...
...but how exactly did Matt "embarrass the university" by taking a class offered by the university pass/fail after he had already graduated? If it was a class solely for girls and Matt fought to be in it I might see that as embarrassing but the last time I checked ballroom dancing requires a girl and a guy to be successful.
I guess we're all back in 6th grade again where guys dancing is 'gay' or 'lame'. I would think you would be past proving your manhood like a self-concious teenager when you're the returning Heisman Trophy winner on a NC team. My bad.
I guess Matt should have took street-fighting 112 or motorcycles 101 to prove how much of a man he is to you. Getting tracked down and pummelled to the point of concussion in the Arizona heat by the best LB's in the country isn't man enough anymore I guess. Consider me educated.
Tyler:
Pete Carroll has stated that "no player will ever again take only ballroom dancing as his only class."
Lots of negative publicity about that and Carroll realized that it took away from the label of "student-athlete."
THAT is how Leinart embarrassed the university.
Tyler, I think if Leinhart took Ballet with MMA 101 I would have been ok with it.
How about marathon and gillyking dancing cheek to cheek?
They deserve each other! Shall you dance? The disco boys! Man, I having fun! Are you?

If the worst thing about Mustain is that one of his classes is ballet, which many other football players take, that's not too bad. Can't fault him for that. At least he didn't get arrested and thrown in jail like Mark Sanchez did for raping a student.
Nothing wrong whatsoever about taking a dance class to complement his other classes.

Do you feel really stupid now, Trojanhoya?
But Pete never mentioned anything about Ballet. So technially, JDB, Sanchez, or Mustain could practice for the Nutcracker during football season and Pete Carroll would have no problem.
Marathon,
I still don't see where anyone (including PC) said that it was an "embarrassment" to the university. A distraction to the team maybe - but not an embarrassment. That statement is still ridiculous and over-reaching.
Some (apparently 6 year old) news reporter thought it would make a good story, ran with it and made it into a distraction for the team. For that reason I can see PC not wanting it to happen again. But it's not even close to an embarrassment.
The dude was already graduated. What does it really matter what one class he took to stay eligible? If I were him and I had a free semester I would probably take something easy that I was interested in as well. Like piano or astronomy (unless of course it's decided for me that interest in Music or outer space is also too 'embarrassing')
Should he have taken a ridiculously difficult class like Calculus III instead. What about the Beatles class? Or is that an embarrassment to the university as well.
Who should Matt have sat down with in advance to approve his class decisions? A class that would have nothing to do with his degree or his standing with the university. Does PC need to hire a "gay or not" class advisor for all his football players?
This is so stupid it's borderline retarded.
Tyler- why do you keep bringing the issue of "gay" here? No one else has even mentioned anything about dancing being "gay" other than you. Everything is "gay or not" with you.
It's not a "gay thing." Get over it.
Wait a minute, is Leinhart planning to go on dancing with the stars? Now everything makes sense.
Sorry for the gay references but I was just trying to think through why it could possibly be considered "embarrassing".
It's a class offered by the university - equal to all others (not necessarily in difficulty but you still get the credit for it). The only way someone could think it's possibly embarrassing is if they're suggesting that it's not 'manly' enough for a football player to take. Even though I am sure a ton of football players have taken ballroom classes before just not as their only class (but not a whole ton of graduated Heisman winners ever returned to school either).
I just don't get why it's embarrassing. He was already graduated, it was just to remain eligible and it was something he was interested in. What part of that makes it embarrassing. Like I said it wound up being a distraction becasue of the press coverage and that's why PC probably commented on it but it shouldn't be embarrassing.
I think you're right. Ballroom dancing is not as embarrassing as Ballet. Embarrasing to imagine our future Heisman trophy winning QB dancing on his tippy toes to the nutcracker, wearing pink tights. Arghh!!
