Maybe you don't like your seats at the Coliseum these days but at least you have one. In this 1947 photo, workers pick up trash after a football game when the stadium featured bleachers.

About Inside USC
Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC
graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for
the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet
message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this
moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in
antagonizing the "Internet geeks."

Bleachers that are still in the East end of the stadium today. Actually with Bleachers the stadium was able to accmmodate up to 103,000 fans.
The seating numbering didnt allow for much space for guys with wide shoulders like myself. You find that in the endzone seating at the Rose Bowl as well. That pack you in like sardines. If you notice many of the college stadiums that hold 90-105K like Ohio Stadium, Beaver Stadium (PSU), and Vols Stadium (Tenn) they all have bench style seats. So they are able to pack in 10-15K more than a stadium like the Coliseum.
One thing I wish they had not done at the Coliseum was to remove all the bench style seats in the Peristyle end. Right now you basically have empty rows of stands in that area with no seats. I believe they removed those benches at the time they were putting in the theatre style seats and ran our of funds of something. It makes the stadium look like an erector set of junk in that end.
Yes, I sat there many many times, and if you had 2 or 3 fat guys sitting next to you, well that was just too damn bad for you! No offense to any overweight readers meant.
I thought that was the Penn st. football team for a minute....
USC1966 LOL Now why didn't I think of old Joe Pa? I fear he may be getting like old Woody Hayes!
Yeah cleaning the bleachers is pretty harsh...what a mess after a game with 105,000 people throwing beer cups and pretzel wrappers on the ground...ugh
Wow, alcohol in the Coliseum! Full on glass bottle of alcohol. Stupid President Sample! Bring back the beer (in cups)!
Judging from the fact that someone brought a newspaper to the game, I'm assuming USC football must have been boring to watch back then.
Maybe Paul Hackett's Dad was coaching...
Petintong,
I use to actually sell the game lineups as a kid back in the 60s at the Coliseum. The L.A. Times and the Old Herald Examiner use to have a special edition for the games. They would have the lineups for each team on the front page of the newspapers.
We would sell the papers for 25 cents. I seem to remember we would get 5 cents per paper we sold plus free admission to the games. It would make my day. At that time Footlong Hot dogs were 35 cents. We would have a ball as kids back then.
TrojanEncore,
That's some interesting stuff! I wish I could have been there to see that. At that price, I would have eaten my weight in Hot Dogs.
