Picture Of The Day

With 5 p.m. kickoffs becoming the norm for USC, here's a reminder that night football is no stranger to the Coliseum, with this picture of the Rams-Redskins game in 1946. Maybe some of our readers can remember how long the scoreboard included that big brightly lit clock at the top.
How much more interesting would the Coliseum look today if they brought back features like the clock? (UCLA Library).

I remember that Clock Scott. It was actually the game clock before they got the digital clock. The hands actually moved like the big and small hands on a watch. The official time was kept on the field however. I guess later they got the digital display clock and the video board.
I remember going to my 1st Rams game back in 1958. They would open the Preseason with the Redskins back then each year in the annual Times Charity Game. A few years later the upstart Dallas Cowboys filled that slot in the preseason opener.
If you notice from the picture the field actually sat more toward the East end. This brought the action closer to the Peristyle end. As all those seats were used at that time.
If you notice the Coliseum Track was in at that time. I'm not sure how they could hold another Olympic games in the Coliseum with the Track taken out to make room for more lower level seats.

Scott I was at that game. I was ten years old and went with my father. There were wooden benches instead of seats.
At halftime they had everybody light a match or a cigarette lighter and then turned out the lights.
Times have changed.

The old scoreboard game clock was confusing and difficult to read. If by some strange chance it were still atop the Coliseum scoreboard, everyone would be complaining about the quaint relic from the forties.
USC, by the way, had played its first varsity night game at the Coliseum two years earlier, on a Monday evening against Washington. It was supposed to be a one-time thing, but it drew 70,000. The following year, the first (yes, there were two that season) SC-UCLA game was played under the lights; the rest, as they say...

Isn't it interesting how the sidelines all along the Coliseum are devoid of people. Compare it to todays' SC football games and you have a stark contrast. BTW, I love the photos, keep 'em coming.

Rob,
I notice the empty sidelines. I'm wondering if this picture was taken at halftime. Frequently even today at half time those standing along the sidelines find a place to sit; On the players benches, into the locker room, into the parade tunnel, to the restroom, or get something to eat.
