More Carroll, Less Miles
Neither Pete Carroll nor I actually bothered to read LSU coach Les Miles' controversial comments ripping the Trojans' schedule until I took the liberty of reading them to Carroll last night.
Hey,we're busy. He has to recruit and run a football program. I have to follow Mitch Mustain.
Anyways, here was Carroll's reaction: ``He's really taking a shot at all the other schools we play. Maybe the comments should come from the coaches at the other schools, including Charlie (Weis) at Notre Dame. He didn't slam us. He slammed all the other schools we play.''
After the jump is Miles' actual quote for those who have not seen it.
"I would like nothing better than to play USC for the [national] title," Miles said. "I can tell you this, that they have a much easier road to travel. They're going to play real knockdown drag-outs with UCLA and Washington, Cal-Berkeley, Stanford -- some real juggernauts -- and they're going to end up, it would be my guess, in some position so if they win a game or two, that they'll end up in the title [game].

Comments
Miles made his bed, now me must lie in it. I have a feeling that we'll hear those quotes repeated more than a few times this year.

I love to see Coach Carroll take the "high road" and not directly respond to Les Miles. By the way - what would Les Miles know about what it takes to play in a BCS National Championship game?

If you missed it, PC address the question on the Petros-Money Show on Monday night. His reaction to the idiotic statement, "hey we are busy preparing for this season". In other words, PC and the boys are focused in on the season, winning games and taking care of business. PC showed his class, while Sgt. Miles has shown his drill instructor regiment, and his lack of brain cells.

I said it before and will say it again...Les Miles is an idiot.
He had 5 first rounders on his team last year (USC apparently had none) and couldn't even win the SEC West. It would seem to me that based on that fact he really should be focusing more on improving his coaching and less on attacking the best program in the country.
I really pray that USC and LSU get matched up in the NC game. USC has a much tougher road to get there (despite what Les Miles thinks) but I have faith in PC.
I am also fully confident that LSU's "run deep and I'll throw it to you offense" they ran against ND's pathetic defense last year won't work against USC. Not unless you want Taylor Mays/Ellison to pick off everything thrown and the game to be over by the end of the 1st qtr.
You would think that with LSU's close escapes against ASU and Oregon St. in the past few years that they would have learnt not to bash something they know nothing about but I guess it's alwasys up to USC to put other conferences in their place.
LSU wants none of this...but they might just get some.

Keep in mind that Miles played and coached at Michigan, which more often than not survived the Big Ten only to get doused by the inferior Pac-10 representative (USC, natch) in the Rose Bowl.

The only thing sweeter than beating LSU for a National Championship is beating LSU with a Louisiana QB and a Louisiana RB...in Louisiana at the Sugar Bowl!

JJH4USC: Brilliant comment
Also, lets see how Inch and Miles does with a team he recruited and its not Saban's boys.
They should come up with a new post season trophy; The SEC Crier of the Year. It would be quite a showdown between Tuberville, Miles, and Saban

...and speaking of Carroll...you have to love SI.Com...Stewart Mandel just did a list of the 10 Best and 5 Worst College Football Coaches coaching today.
The Best: coming in at No. 1 - Pete Carrol... “Carroll's "worst" season since 2002 last year still involved 11 wins, a Pac-10 championship and Rose Bowl victory. He followed that up with a fifth straight top-three recruiting class.” - Stewart Mandel
Of the Worst: coming in at No.5 - Karl Dorrell....“Last year's USC upset was the first sign Dorrell's Bruins were finally turning the corner -- and they promptly followed it up with that Emerald Bowl debacle.”- Stewart Mandel
SI.com has the rest of the list.

I grew up in New Orleans, and was properly raised to loathe LSU. I may even hate them more than the bRuins. How can a coach whose team routinely plays 8 home games a year (although this year they're making it hard on themselves by playing 7) come up with this kind of crap. Their non-conference games are against Tulane, Middle Tennessee, and Louisiana Tech and he's going to call our schedule soft? Their fans honestly think that PC was too scared to play LSU after the split NC, and backed out of a non NCAA sanctioned "winner take all" game. I don't know how they come up with this crap.
I would love to see Miles eat his words and see SC play a worthier opponent in the NC in New Orleans. I plan on being there.

I'm with Trojan97. I'm absolutely sick and tired of teams playing an unbalanced schedule, loading up on home games and playing pathetic teams out of conference. The SEC is one of the worst when it comes to this.
What, Vanderbilt and Kentucky are powerhouses? I'll bet on ASU, Arizona, Oregon State, WSU and Washington over Kentucky, Vande or the Mississippis any day.
Every conference has their laggards that serve as fodder for the better teams, some have more than their share (yes, I'm referring to you "Big" East).
The only real joke in the conference will be Stanford, all of the others have relatively strong programs that can beat a Top 10 team any given day.

Three comments. 1. One overlooked aspect of Strength of Conference is how USC is absolutely dominating the recruiting on the West Coast. By loading up on 10 tailbacks, getting Mustain, etc...it doesn't leave as much talent for the other 9 schools. Perhaps the SEC is indeed stronger top to bottom because the recruiting success is more balanced, but that certainly doesn't mean any SEC team will be able to handle SC.
2. The Sporting News has USC's schedule ranked as the 4th toughest. Don't see any SEC schools on their Top 5 list.
3. As for weak schedules, check out West Virginia's schedule (along with Ohio State's non-conference schedule). There are at least 15-20 teams that would go undefeated playing in the Big East.

SEC12ROW52,
I agree with most of your points...but I wouldn't knock Ohio State (even though I despise them)... they just completed a home and away with Texas, and are taking a break before they start a home and away with USC.

Before I'm stoned to death, let this LSU fan say that Iam also a fan of USC. I doon't write on LSU's boards much, but will probably enjoy yal more.
I am embarassed of our coach, but I think I know what he would like to say.
"when computers, polls, or fans around the nation guage schedule strength it is obvious that USC and other PAC-10 schools are harder via average. Problem is, currently USC and LSU's goal is not winning seasons nor conference championships, it's the national championship; hence a loss or two is unacceptable. This being the case everybody's strength of schedule doesn't apply to LSU and USC's situation because they look at the strength via the "mean" or average ranking or power rating of the teams. Due to the SEC's pathetic OOC's the strength of schedule suck. But when the objective is a crystal ball via an undefeated season; the "median" could be more important.
Phil Steele's magazine has USC's schedule ranked 2nd two years in a row, and he's right.
But, once again, if we look at winning it all screw opp. winning % and such and look at the median.
according to preseason pub. Athlons) LSU plays
#6,9,20,21,29,34,39,43,71,
75,105,106 and 108 leaving the median at 31; whereas
usc plays 11,15,18,22,37,38,40,44,58,64,100,113 USC's is at 38 this year.
The schedule's are close but look at LSU's last year
The tigers played teams ranked #3,5,8, and 5 at the time of the game. Final polls are skewed because we (lsu and usc are often the one to send them down)
USC played 19, 21,17, and 6.
Now come on; while both sides have a point it is much easier to win 10 games playing 11 schools ranked in the 20's than 8 schoold ranked between 120-130 and then 3 schools ranked 1,4,and 7.
And yeah I know yal smacked Arky. (i loved it)But we spanked yal's #6 in our bowl game.
That's the point that Les couldn't possibly elaborate on, nor my somewhat Southern brotheren touting their teams on espn.dot.loser boards miss also. Hell, Florida wound up #1; you know how much that screws an undefeated season having to play the best.lol
I don't care about 2003, cause we won the BCS and yal won what you could. I believe we were much better. Now, after several season's recruiting: USC is for REAL and I wouldn't bet LSU without points, but I'd love it.
FYI The whole country had heard of dwayne jarret and steve smith, yet dwayne bowe and craig davis both went in the 1st. Jamarcuss wasn't in any conversation of top qb's on the networks all year and Leinart was adored by women in Louisiana who didn't know of JR. This TV stuff affects human polls man.
By the way I coached hoops against Mcknight and he lit me up w 26 pts and coached yal's SG dwight lewis
peace out
