Thanks But . . .

It looks like fullback Jody Adewale will remain a normal student and not return to the football team this season. There had been discussions about coming back for one more season but Adewale will focus on his master's degree.
USC will open training camp with Stanley Havili, Jordan Campbell and Cooper Stephenson at fullback.

Hrm. Sucks, but you can't really blame the kid. Good luck with the Master's, Jody!

In my day, when Havili and Powdrell went down, the coaches would find a good blocker--with good hands, stick him in at FB, and have him sleep with the playbook. If he didn't 1oo% fully respond enthusiastically, he'd be kicked off the team faster than you could say Howard Jones. These prima-donna kids who think only of what their best pro position might be, and who forget their teammates and the best interests of the team make me puke. I know and understand why they have to be coddled nowadays, but it makes me want to puke anyway. John McKay wouldn't tolerate that for two seconds!

Good decision. He will do much beter in the business world than he ever would have in the football world

But to add further, I don't blame Jody one bit! The coaches wanted him to transfer early in his career---he stuck it out--and then they yanked his scholarship after last season as I understand. Jody has pride, and the coaches got just what they deserved---what goes around, comes around. Way to go, Jody, and best of luck to you!

I agree with TIREBITER1 completely. I was shocked when I first heard about players refusing to play a position after being asked by a coach.

And on a side note: TIREBITER1, I think you mentioned your age before and I really like the fact that you're posting and giving us the perspective of someone who's seen how things have changed over the years.

Best of luck to Jody with his future, he will be a real success in the business world. The real question that you have to ask, would Jody have really gotten that much PT? As long Stanley is healthy, then he will be the FB, and Jordan Campbell is no slouch either. I saw not long ago on the blog, that someone had compared Stanley to Malaefou MacKenzie (good call on the comparison). As long Stanley and Jordan are healthy, they will bring a new dimension and versatility to the FB position, that has not been seen since the days of Mala. Fight On!

To Trojan RAB: Thanx! I appreciate your comments--gives me the strength to keep going-- ha ha!

The older generation played for the love of the game??? Sure, that is why the old time NFLers have a built in sense of entitlement to now NFL large money. Don't buy the glory days story one bit.

Tirebiter1:

Not that I necessarily disagree with you but a counterpoint:

Lets say I am a top-notch medical student and I have academic scholarship offers from USC, Michigan, and Stanford. (I don't know about the quality of the medical schools but lets assume all are excellent.) My goal is to be a brain surgeon (please no Jim Healy jokes here) so I go to USC and enter the pre-med program. After I have been told about how I will get a great job after med school and I have signed up, I am told that there are too many pre-med students but there are openings in the education program. Not that it is a bad program but I don't want to be a teacher and the pay is not what a surgeon would make.

My point is, some of these football players come to USC because they will be prepared to be NFL stars at the position they will be recruited at. (and thus have their families set for lifetime.) If some of these guys don't want to move to fullback I don't blame them. Especially since they wanted to come to USC, instead of going to another program which would have guaranteed them starting.

TO Fighton; NO,Iwas merely trying to demonstrate the power of the coaches in the old days vs. the coddling of the prima-donnas now.

PH55 YES,you have a good point too. Sometimes the coaches promise too much just to get the kid in. Usually we don't know just what the kid was promised. Take Allen Bradford, for instance---a great linebacker in high school, but too small to be a pro linebacker. Kid wants to be a runner in the pros, but what i've seen so far of him, his best shot as a pro would seem to be as a db. I had to laugh last year when Allen went into Petes' office and asked him if Pete thought he could win the Heisman--Pete told him, "the sky is the limit" Well, anything to keep the kid a happy camper, i guess, but even Pete complained about him in spring practice--that he wasn't consistent enough with his power--this was before Allen got hurt--but if we are desperate for a fb, talk the kid into helping the team out for a year[if he can block] and then put him at db so he can showcase his skills--unless his running greatly improves.
But I see your point and it is well-taken. Some coaches promise the kid the moon to get him--and it's like they have to---just shows how the game has changed.

Anyone old enough to remember Marcus Allen blocking for Charlie White? Or Petros carrying water for Matt Money Smith? That's what we're talking about here.
