Comparison Compulsion

There's been a lot of comparisons between Patrick Turner and David Ausberry to either Mike Williams or Dwayne Jarrett. Pete Carroll even compared Turner to Mike Williams and Jarrett in today's Daily News (linked in Morning Buzz).
But here's one opinion on the difference between Jarrett and this year's starters.
``Jarrett ran nice routes and he could convince you he was doing something that he was not,'' cornerback Shareece Wright said. ``Patrick and David just go up and get the ball.''

Translation?

Does that mean the Twin Towers are one dimensional or are they so dominating they make receptions look simple?

I think it means, uh oh, our #4 CB basically thinks that our two starting WRs are not very polished and will rely on height at all times.

Scary because, unless the ball is thrown high, these guys won't have that height advantage AND better cornerbacks are going to be able to read their moves and get to the ball before they do.

You'd think that after 3 years, Turner (#2 WR recruit) would be fantastic. Im not jumping on him yet, but in my mind, there should be no doubt.

Also, why do I have such a good feeling about Stafon Johnson. Somehow, I just think he is going to impress this year. Sad thing is, felt the same way about Whitney Lewis.

Whether it's because they don't need to or don't know how to, I'd think the only important thing is that they "just go up there and get the ball."

04-

But how many teams have 2
crazy tall CB's?

04trojan...if you saw Turner during the recent scrimmages...I think you would feel a little more confident that this guy is going to eat up the corners in the Pac 10.

It's hard to say..I took that post as negative, since he didn't mention that they run nice routes like DJ does. I guess he is trying to say they just out-muscle or have more height than the CB's and so get the ball.

Well, what's wrong with that? Gonna get some TD's that way..but I do kind of see 04's point. Here is WR recruit #1 in his class on one side and WR #1 in his class on the other side and they aren't really impressing anyone. Scott posted that we still don't really have a breakaway threat.

What's starting to worry me is that this years team is starting to resemble last years team...no one to stretch the field, just a plodding, 3 yard cloud of dust offense, and hope the WR's can bail us out in the 4th Quarter.

I don't think he's making a negative statement. Just an observation.

Dwayne wasn't the fastest or most physical receiver and had to run great routes just to get open. Auz and PT are both bigger and faster than Dwayne and don't finesse the CBs as much as DJ used to (partly due to inexperience but also partly do to their builds).

Maybe that means they'll actually be able out muscle some CBs for catches this year. Something that DJ was less than stellar at.

Yes, I'm talking to you Dwayne...your lack of physicality cost us that Oregon St. game. Come back to the ball and make a catch. Dwayne had great hands and body control but was too easily man-handled off the line of scrimmage and in traffic.

Oh, and I disagree with the lack of burners critique. Patterson, RoJo and McKnight will provide all the breakaway speed USC was missing last year. They are all burners and will wreak havoc in secondaries this year. Who do you double cover in a 3-wide formation with PT on one side, Ausberry on the other. RoJo/TP in the slot and McKnight going in motion out of the backfield. Danger...

Tyler:
Vidal Hazelton is 6'3" and has very good hands along with a 4.3/4.4 speed.
Hello?

Hey Tyler:

About the Oregon State game, you cannot solely blame the loss on DJ ("Yes, I'm talking to you Dwayne...your lack of physicality cost us that Oregon St. game.").

I remember the play to which you are undoubtedly referring - the interception in the end zone that Jarrett failed to fight for, and OSU ran back a long way (and I believe got a FG right before halftime). However, DJ was coming off an injury to his shoulder, and was playing at less than 100%. Cut him some slack for that one play, eh?

There were several other reasons why USC lost to OSU (other turnovers, the lack of pass defense, the tipped 2-pt conversion come to mind).

As far as DJ's toughness, I think catching "THE PASS" from Lienart at Notre Dame on 4th and 9 with one eye blurred demonstrated that DJ has plenty of toughness. Also, Leinart called an audible, because DJ had one-on-one coverage and, hence, the ability to get off the line of scrimmage (albeit against the weak ND secondary). Also, DJ sure showed "physicality" in the Rose Bowl against Texas, especially with the great, leaping TD catch in the 4th quarter.

Fight On!

Maybe it was a backhanded compliment to the new guys. There were some big plays last season where DJ convinced me he was gonna do something he didn't do... catch the ball.

Ya lets rip Turner before the season starts. Yes he was a #1 recruit when he came in but it is tough to show what you got when your behind DJ and Steve Smith. He was behind 2 NFL receivers. Oh and lets not forget the Washington game that he started. 12 catches, 116 yards, 1 TD in a 26-20 win. Seems like he's clutch enough for me when called upon!

Im not ripping Turner, I just think he should have produced more so far, even being behind two great WRs.

I agree, I think its too early to say we don't have a breakaway threat b/c we have a lot of speed on the team. It's really going to depend on how well JDB gets them the ball and how well they can catch.

How do you produce more when you got two guys ahead of you who get there 1,000 yards, a very good tight end who gets a good amount of passes, and the tailbacks get a fair amount of passes there way. And lets not forget this is not Hawaii where we throw 80% of the time. This is a balanced offense. He produced when called upon. There was no way for him to do more than he did last year whith those guys!
