Difference Of Philosophy

USC will scrimmage tonight with the first team facing the second team in a mock game as Pete Carroll prefers not to have the starters scrimmage against each other. By contrast, UCLA frequently has its first team go against its first team.

I wonder which philosophy is more common, USC's or UCLA's? I can actually see the value of both ways: but I think 1st vs. 2nd really only works if you have depth.

UCLA does everything backwards

UCLA does things the way it does, and you see the results. Which results would you prefer?

I am all for USC's 1st Team scrimmaging against the 2nd Team...it is great practice for when they have to play UCLA in the Coliseum on December 1st.

I have always wondered why he has the 1st team vs the 2nd team. It seems the 1st team isnt getting the fullest resistance that way. I can understand the 1st teams vs the 2nd team in normal practices to build the 1st teams confidence. However in the scrimmage go 1st and 1st and let it all hang out.

I'm guessing that 1st vs. 2nd is really to get the 2nd teamers confidence and up to speed in case of injury, which happens throughout the season.

Karl Dorrell's program is really the model of football success.

....I almost typed that sentence without laughing.

Its a moot point though. The second team would finish second in the Pac-10. (Thats not a knock on the Pac-10, just a comment on the talent USC has.)
