Outside Influences

With Emmanuel Moody transferring and Jamere Holland leaving, USC coach Pete Carroll is convinced outsiders are trying to convince some players to leave the program.
``Those guys got their information from somewhere,'' Carroll said. ``Somebody's talking to them. I have some ideas.''

So PC has some ideas. Do you Scott?

Hey Pete, I love 'ya, but quit being paranoid. The players have eyes too. They can see and sense how they fit in or don't. Both were banged up and taking a back seat to guys both healthier and more capable. Don't need any "outsiders" to tell them that.

BeverlyHillsBoys,

You have no idea what "information" Pete is referring to in his quote. Maybe there is something both of them said to him in their meetings that suggests tampering. Maybe they both used the same phrasing to voice their concerns or made the same excuses/complaints.

USC has too much depth at too many positions to support players that are constantly injured. You get hurt you might never be heard from again.

Either way I wish both guys best of luck. They're both talented kids.

I hope Moody didn't leave for the helicopter water skiing in Oklahoma. It's over an hour away on the other side of I35.

It has to be Steve Clarkson, right Wolfie?

Still bent out of shape over pro day a few years back...

It's either him or Lou Holtz...damn that Lou Holtz

Cut to Pete Carroll wearing an aluminum foil hat. "They're reading my thoughts!"

Gee, could it be those agents always hanging around the program? They want to represent these kids, and the kids aren't going to play, they need to find them a new home where they can star. Having all the agents in the lockerroom, o the sidelines, at practice, etc, can have it's negatives.

Moody's descision was a business decision - how can you blame him. Yeah, being macho to compete is all well and good, but going some where to be a feature back gets you to the NFL.

This is what happens when you over recruit positions, players can see the hand writing on the wall, they are not going to get a lot of play time. More players may leave for this reason. Pete
gets carry away with trying to recruit every 5
star play out there. Two or three deep max. at
the skilled positions is sufficient.

Yes, scottsdale, clearly Pete Carroll has no idea what he's doing when it comes to recruiting (or coaching).

Holland and Moddy act like they will not have their day. Part of the reason we are backed up in positions is because PC keeps hanging in there with Chauncey and Patch. If you are loyal to the program you will have your day.

PC teaches these boys how to earn their keep, if they stick around.

The old addage comes to mind: "whether you believe you can or can't, you're probably right". Under the circumstances, some culling is to be expected. They may have talent, but they will never be champions.

It's very easy for armchair toads to criticize these kids - I'll repost what I said before: It's a business decision. If any of the armchair coaches on this or any board had potential NFL size/talent, you'd feel very differently about Moody/Holland.

Guys like Charlie White, Marcus Allen and Ricky Bell had to wait their turns, as I remember it. They turned out to be pretty fair football players.

How is having two deep over-recruiting? Who hasn't gotten to see the field. Moody had almost 500 yards in his frosh year. Talking about opportunity.

Look, Reed, Patch have debilitating injuries, yet 'SC keeps them around. That's 2 down. CW is on year 6 b/c of some of his own problems and 'SC kept him around. He's out next year. Marc Tyler had a broken leg but 'SC stayed with the commitment and he's redshirting. That's 2 more down.

Moody stayed b/c he knew he out-competed CJ Gable and Stafon had a work-ethic issue. But Stafon took advantage and voila, he won out. We play 3 backs and we have five or six players (one had to be moved over from defense.) So where is that a problem?

We are two deep at any position. Take Sanchez out and we're utility/walk on. With Moody gone we'll have CJ who is a general athlete rather than a rb or a light in the butt pure frosh McKnight for our speed back.

Broderick Green will get to be "thunder", our big runnng back if converted Allen Bradford get's injured.

One injury at corner and we are using an oversized, safety. With Jamere gone (if he is gone) and Travon injured (injuries happen in football a lot you know) we have to use a pure frosh Ronald Johnson or a 6'3 210 Hazleton in the slot!

Jamere refused to play corner even though he knew USC is very, very shallow there because he wanted to do what he wanted to do. He was injured with a broken collar bone, has a persistent groin injury (which he should have rehabbed instead of running track last year) and now he is behind. Not to be cruel but he doesn't have weight or hands, he has speed and with his groin injury he has lost that. He needs to take care of himself and do what is necessary to see the field at a position that works for him.

USC's talent surplus has become the stuff of legend but like most legends it isn't true.

I am amazed...Holland and Moody transfer and all of a sudden USC rivals UCLA or Notre Dame in talent. Are you serious?

Let's be clear about something...talent gets you to the NFL...being "the man" at a school may get you a high draft position and a huge bonus. That is why these guys want playing time...and more power to them.

Let me ask this question...which is going to be more profitable for a running back? Getting 600 carries at USC, getting drafted 5th overall and receiving a huge bonus, but only playing 5-7 years before the body breaks down...OR, getting 300 carries at USC, getting drafted in the second round, and playing 8-10 years because your body isn't falling apart?

PS...it only takes 1 great year to get drafted high...ask Carson Palmer!

Tim:
Tommy's is right and he laid it out sensibly. Furthermore you are missing the point. I dare to say that Carson Palmer would have been drafted in the first round anyway even without the Heisman. Peyton Manning proves that point for me. Look how many Heisman winning QB's are around? Remember all those Heisman winning QB's from the U(Miami)? Ward is playing basketball, rest my case...
Last but NOT least your talent statement is out of context and absurd...
