Scouting Report

After a week, an NFL scout who attended practice offered some opinions:
Strengths: Size, versatility at tailback, linebacker.
Weaknesses: Speed at wide receiver, cornerback, the passing game when under pressure.
Adequate: Defensive line.

So in this un-named NFL scouts opinion, is he saying that the "O" is lacking? Tell me of one "O" including the Trojan "O" that looks forward to going up against perhaps the best "D" in all of college football. The Trojan "O" practicing against the Trojan "D" is only going to make the "O" that much better. Plus, this is only the completion of the first week of practice, so the “O” will come together. Fight On!

Adequate???

He considers Sed Ellis, LoJack, Everson Griffin and Fili as "Adequate"? What does he think is "good"? The 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers? How about he talk to Lloyd Carr about the USC D-line?

Speed at WR...OK I can see that. But lack of 4.3 speed never hurt DJ or SS.

CB...now, I have been on this for a while. I keep harping on how our secondary needs help but everyone always assures me we are "loaded at that position" and I dont' know what I am talking about. Maybe they can play Pinkard more, I hear alot of criticism of Cary Harris..

But on the whole, I mean damn, if USC is mostly "adequate" what college team is "good"??

Actually, sounds about right.

DL: Yeah, its adequate. Not great but adequate. Remember, in the Cover-2, if you have stud LB's, all you need is a stud at NT to break down the gaps, and the rest follows. See the Bears for that template (Tommie Harris at NT, role players at the other line spots).

We do lack top-end speed on the corners of both sides of the ball, but we are also huge at those positions, so I guess it balances out.

And because of the lack of top-end speed at the WR positions, it hurts the passing game when pressured. Also, JD isn't the greatest under pressure (see the UCLA game). But we should have a good running game, so again, it should balance out.

Adequate for what? The NFL? If that's what he meant... not bad - not bad at all!

If the NFL scout watched JH, TP, RoJo and JMK run and still feels the WR speed is weak - then exactly which teams would he find average (or exceptional)?

Apparently, a merely "adequate" DL (backed by strong LBs but weak CB play) is still capable of generating enough pressure to render the passing game less than average?

Huh?

Did the voice in your head tell you he is an NFL Scout, or are you just guessing he is? Why don't you ask him how USC stacks up against your top team, West Virginia.
