USC And Idaho

USC’s first win at the Rose Bowl Stadium (or the Tournament of Roses’ Stadium, as it was then known) was against Idaho. The Trojans defeated the Vandals, 14-0, before a crowd of 12,500, on November 18, 1922. That was the first USC game against Idaho, as both joined the Pacific Coast Conference that year.
It was a transition year for USC: the first season that would conclude with a Rose Bowl game, the last season that would feature a game at Pomona, USC’s first real big rival.

There was enough people living in Idaho in 1922 that they could field a football team?

I wonder if USC ever played
CS Fullerton back when the baseball juggernaut had a pigskin program. I know Marcus' brother Damon Allen was a scrambling QB for the Titans and starred in the CFL for many seasons.

Trojan&Tonic, USC never played Cal State Fullerton (or Long Beach State) when they fielded a football team. UCLA, however, did play those schools at the Rose Bowl in the 80's before both programs were discontinued.

No, SC never played the Titans in football. Remember that Marcus Allen played only QB and DB in high school too.

We should all Remember the Titans (D1 Football Team)!

Is it too late to have Idaho play Boise State's oppponent this Saturday and have the Broncos visit the Coliseum?

Now that would be gangsta!

Remembering that the University of Idaho is located only eight miles from Washington State University, both Idaho and WSU were fielding football teams in the 1920's. The Cougars actually upset USC in 1925. And after its victory at Idaho in 1925, SC did not win another game in what might be called the "Greater Pullman-Moscow" metropolitan area until 1953, losing to the Cougars in 1930, and playing them to ties in 1937 and 1950.

USC never returned to Idaho after the 1925 trip for football, and USC has not played Idaho since 1929, even though Idaho was in the Pacific Coast Conference until 1958.

Amazingly, the Bruins played Long Beach State four times in the eighties, and played CSUN in 1992.

Of course the question is tongue in cheek, because that could never happen.

But, once upon a time, in 1924 to be exact, Cal told USC that it and Stanford did not want to play USC anymore, starting in 1925. The message was delivered to SC on November 1, 1924, at the Cal-USC game, at Berkeley.

SC was miffed. They were scheduled to play Stanford at the Coliseum on November 8, 1924, the following Saturday. But they told Stanford not to bother coming to LA, and put St. Mary's, the one in Moraga, CA, on the schedule instead.

On November 8th, St. Mary's upset USC, 14-10.

Great stuff MikeG:

I wonder if the OC-LA metro area will ever see the addition of 3rd NCAA D1 football team? Fullerton and The Beach seem unlikely to ever bring back football. The best bet is UC Irvine, as the city and school continue to raise their profile. UCI students actually assessed themselves an extra fee to bring back baseball. That team is coming off a CWS appearance.
