Weekend Forum Answers

Here's the Weekend Forum answers, featuring a lighter-than-expected offering of Mitch Mustain questions.

I wrote I anticipated more transfers and Jamere Holland proved me right. There could be more but I doubt it, at least before the start of the season. Pete Carroll is always aware of these things and does what he can. But sometimes he doesn't mind if a Josh Tatum or Holland transfers.

I think Nick Holt and USC will have clean sheets at the team hotel every Friday night.

I forgot to list Stafon Johnson in the Open Forum. So here's the snap rankings, not taking what defense the backs went against.

1. Chauncey Washington
2. Broderick Green
3. Joe McKnight/Stafon Johnson
4. Allen Bradford/C.J. Gable
5. Desmond Reed
6. Hershel Dennis
7. Marc Tyler.

Kevin Thomas returned to practice over the weekend and his injured shoulder is finally feeling better. He always gets thrown into the mix when he is healthy so he should be in the rotation -- if he is healthy

Jeff Byers is healthy and a clear starter at guard. His ability to play is never an issue, just whether he can withstand the physical toll on his body. So far he's OK.

Yes, you finally figured out which blogger was referring too.

Compare Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, John David Booty.Palmer has the strongest arm, best feet while Leinart's the best at reading defenses and finding open receiviers. Booty's arm is stronger than Leinart's and his speed is roughly the same. He makes passes that Leinart would be reluctant to attempt. He's shorter than both Palmer and Leinart obviously but he might be a better leader than Leinart. As always, I would love to see Palmer with Leinart's supporting cast and vice versa. Or Booty too.

Garrett Green was not ahead of Mike McDonald on the depth chart because he bounced around too much from safety to QB to safety to QB. McDonald's run the offense for five years so he knows what he's supposed to do. Green is still learning. Now he's a WR which truly seems his best spot if he is going to play at USC.

Mitch Mustain (ah, finally a question) is in good shape. Like every QB, the strength coaches would like to see him get stronger in the off season.

Ronald Johnson will definitely stretch a defense. So will Joe McKnight. That's why both will play this season, they a dimension missing otherwise.

Brook Van Muijen was dropped, went home and is flying back this week. His return might be based on recent transfers allowing some more open roster spots for walk-ons.

Eric Scott's situation was not widely discussed although was interest over whether UCLA would take him back. His return means there will continue to be a fierce rivalry in certain recruiting situations between the schools that started last spring. Even when the two schools do not necessarily want the prospect, there is a lot consternation between the staffs.

Mustain is starting to get more snaps but he'll stay in shape with weightlifting sessions that occur during the season.

Joe McKnight will only play wide receiver in the same way Reggie Bush and he will not be a traditional receiving.

Locks to redshirt: Martin Coleman, Trey Henderson, Aaron Corp, DaJohn Harris and maybe Michael Reardon.

David Ausberry appears to have beaten out Vidal Hazelton mainly due to Hazelton's groin injury. But they could both play the same number of snaps no matter who starts.

Luthur Brown is not really a factor right now because he's been hurt with a hamstring injury.

Petros' impression of me is quite flattering. One day I will try to impersonate his writing skills, but first I need to buy crayons.

The athletic dept. is still trying to raise money for the Galen Center, mainly by sticking a huge personal seat fee on those season seats they think people will buy to see O.J. Mayo play for one season. So do what you can today to erase Galen debt and increase the chance of a second soft-serve ice cream machine being added.

Mitch Mustain has not learned the whole playbook. The new QBs are still getting parts of it each day in camp. It's not an easy offense to run for first-year players.

I agree the Daily News should buy banner ads at Razorback Stadium telling fans all it can learn about former home-state talent. Or at least a movie ad on the video board for ``Mitch and Me.'' We may move the premiere to Springdale, Ark., if we get enough interest.

Damian Williams can do cardio and rehab but he cannot do football drills because he is recovering from two shoulder surgeries.

O.J. Simpson was very accomodating the day I interviewed him. He talked at length and visited with USC players and officials. Naturally, all of us were aware of the odd circumstances of him being there. And USC took quite a bit of heat nationally for his appearance. I remember the night of Simpson's appearance, a now former USC official downplayed any repurcussions by saying it was a necessary evil and would be quickly forgotten. That was one of the most inaccurate predictions of the season.

Moody was not asked to leave the team. Players often talk to each other about transferring but nothing usually happens. And they don't get influenced by others. If anything, they would stay if Moody transferred. More carries for them!

I'm not sure if Pinkard will start but he will get on the field a lot, no matter who starts. Cary Harris came back from his hamstring injury this weekend and looked fine.

Taylor Mays would never become a DE. He's big but he knows if he stays around 235, he can become a big-time NFL prospect at safety with huge athletic skills. That's the position he loves not DE. Better to be a freak of nature safety than a slightly undersized or bloated D.

Clay Matthews is a linebacker who is now playing a lot of defensive end. He's done well enough that he might even play this season instead of Pete Carroll saying he would for the third straight year.

Joe McKnight seems to be handling pressre well and doesn't mind taking pictures or signing autographs. But let's see for sure when the season starts.

Petros Papadakis cannot figure out how to say his own name so I would hardly expect him to say Mustain correctly.

You really can't judge recruits so quicky, you need to wait for players to become juniors or redshirt sophomores. But clearly guys like Taylor Mays are already living up to their hype.

Great work as always, Scott.

To satisfy the insatiable quench your readers have for America's Quarterback, Mitch Mustain, you should consider adding a weekly feature called Monday Morning Mitch Mustain Musings. The hits will continue to go through the roof.

Mustain in 2008!

great info scott !

Scott,

Thank you very much, young man. You have some fabulous and witty answers. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Scott!

Scott: Once again thank you very very much!!

Some personal observations:
Your humor is improving by leaps and bounds each week--I guess you are going thru Fall practice just like the team is.

It sounds as tho you knew in advance that Holland would transfer, but you didn't want to give his name out-for obvious reasons, because you strongly predicted more tranfers and now you are predicting no more--you must REALLY be on the inside!

I, too, have an idea for a new feature for you beginning in Fall '08. You could call it MONDAY MORNING MITCH MUSTAIN MISTAKES! HA HA!! I AM ONLY KIDDING ALL YOU MUSTAIN LOVERS. Every regular reader knows I am completely neutral on the debate--as of now, that is.

Not to be picky, but FYI, accommodate is spelled with 2 m's--ha ha--but no one is perfect except Pete Sanchez! JUST KIDDING!

I'm being very verbose this morning--I don't know why I keep going on and on, because I am 80, my wife is 30, and I'm always sooooo tired!

Classic line about Petros! Cracked me up.

Good job, Scott.

Hi Scott: PS I forgot to ask you when you sleep, because most days you post every 3-4 hours. Maybe you have a computer by your bed, and post whenever you wake up? I promise that I will never ask any more personal questions with anything connected in any way with your sleep!!!!

Guess I am just bored today--why isn't anyone attacking me re my previous post re Mitch?

I feel in the mood to fight with someone with posts--guess it's just a slow day--it can't be out of respect for elders.

Anyway, thanks again for the forums, Scott.

Hey BITER, for Pete's sake, the name is MARK SANCHEZ (not Pete).

Take note, there is really only one immature, seriously infatuated MUSTAIN lover on this board, and that is TrojanSAEqueerForMustainNYC and his dozens of amalgams. That's why the Moostain crush-fest occurs in bunches (parroting the same couple lines) or not at all. Just continue to watch how it occurs.

LOL LOL WELL, I DID SAY I WAS OLD AND TIRED!
BUT, I ADMIT, YOU GOT THE OLD BITER!!!

The same idiot from NY with the same old BSing infatuation...
