A Different World

| | Comments (10) |

One more Nebraska story. A couple hours before kickoff rumors swirled through the stadium that two USC players and an assistant coach were sent home early.
It turned out not to be true (for once, no drama!) but it illustrated how wrapped up everyone was about that game. And how quickly rumors spread.
The day before, rumors spread USC moved its practice time to avoid the crowds (also false).
It's a different world.

I heard that it was Antwine Perez, Jamere Holland and Coach O. They kept yammering on and on about "having better opportunities elsewhere" and "being tired of all this winning" so PC sent them packing.

Rumor has it we shouldn't expect to see them on the sidelines come the Wazzu game. Oh well.

Speaking of another world, I was amazed at how over 90% of the 'Huskers' fans wore red with Nebraska paraphernalia. The talk, even in restaurants, was mainly about the game. A poll was taken, and about 50% of the people in Lincoln believed their team would upset SC. And although the game quickly turned against them, they never once booed their boys, and were still hollering encouragement at 35-10. It was only at 42-10 that many of them finally started to give up.
And all this for a team that has not been too good for the last 5-years. Or, as one local writer said, where were all the SC fans from 1983 to 2001? Well...

lawyer john: I didn't saw every game from 1983 to 2001 and attended most. But, as you know, L.A. has a few more distractions than Lincoln.

Things to do on a Saturday afternoon in Lincoln during football season:

1. Watch Huskers win
2. Watch Huskers lose
3. Wait for the College World Series and the long drive to Omaha.

Things to do on a Saturday in Los Angeles during football season:

1. Beach
2. Watch USC win
3. Hiking
4. Dodger Game
5. Angel Game
6. Vegas Trip
6. Volleyball Tourney
...
100. Watch USC lose
101. Watch UCLA win
101. Watch UCLA lose

Hopefully this list helps answer the "where were all the SC fans between 1983 and 2001" question. The only people who support losing teams are those with nothing better to do. And I know this as a fan that went to all the games through the H***ett era. Boy I wish that weren't so now.

Things to Do in LA:

1. Not show up to Spanish Class at LA Trade Tech.

2. Watch OJ get arrested again.

3. Hang out at the holding cell to get SC player autographs.

4. Watch replays of the Oregon State / SC game.

5. Hang out at Reggie Bush's parents house.

6. Sit back and wonder why Tommi Trojan is wearing a mini-skirt and doesn't shave her legs.

7. Go shopping for puppies with Todd McNair.

8. Watch replays of Vince Young shredding the SC defense.

9. Drink at the University Club, especially when underage.

10. Sit back on wonder how SC barely squeaked by to beat Nebraska.

The list could be much longer, but this is a good start!

Thank God for people like Husker37. L.A. is expensive and crowded enough without every hayseed in Nebraska falling in love with the place.

Took your wife to the beach, huh, Husker? You have to be able to count to enjoy Las Vegas. Tell your VB story to Misty & Kerrie. And yes, hiking in Arizona is wonderful, if you're into heat, lizards, and saguaro cactus. I assume you don't like baseball, because of all the West Coast teams in the CWS. Back to football...Beat Ball State!!! PS...I have great respect for most Nebraska fans.

Those were some pretty funny posts. But there REALLY are neat things to do in Nebraska:
Small boat trip down the Missouri River;
Jogging through the central Omaha city park with the best water fountains this side of the Bellagio, Las Vegas;
Crossing the river into Iowa onto a docked cruise ship for gambling;
Racing your car through a deserted downtown at unheard of speeds;
The best steaks I have ever eaten;
The most intimate zoo I have experienced (in Lincoln); and
Some great straightforward talking folks who would die for the local team.

Those were some pretty funny posts. But as a final word to our Nebraska friends, I would like to point out that there REALLY are neat things to do in Nebraska:

Taking a small boat trip down the Missouri river;

Jogging through the square-mile city parks, especially in central park, Omaha, with the best lake water fountains this side of the Bellagio, Las Vegas;

Crossing the river into Iowa onto a docked steamboat for gambling;

Racing my car through a deserted downtown at illegal speeds;

The best steaks I have ever eaten;

The onset of fall in the middle of September;

Rolling hills of cornfields;

Out in the country from the city in 10-minutes;

And some great straightforward talking folks who would die for the local team.
