Discuss The Blowout

Good thing Nebraska coach Bill Callahan opened up that playbook from a year ago. Very impressive. Start talking.

blowout? what blowout I am so mad I dont care what string plyaed at the end the only reason our team is No 1 is because of our supposedly vaunted defense. Good grief we gave up 400 yards passing for gosh sakes and 31 points Totally inexcusable i dont care whos playing. USC needs a killer instinct 24/7 and they need it now We have to be punishing, relentless, unforginving every second No way we should have given up 31 points I am really pissed off

How good will the Trojans be once the passing game gets in sync? Should be good blog material for the next week! Totally dominated the Husker d-line, holes were enormous!

RUN STAFON RUN! How good did Stafon, CJ and Havili look! Great effort by the O-line in a SUPER hostile environment!

I enjoyed seeing just how classy the Nebraska fans were, they showed it this morning on college gameday by silently observing the Danelo tribute, and again when Vincent Joseph went down. Their fans stayed there till the very end of the game and cheered there team on whistle to whistle, something our fans should take note of.

Great team effort, Big Sed was just tossing people up front! 2 big plays from Kyle Moore. We need someone to step up at WR, was very disappointed in PT's impersantaion of Roberto Duran with his hands of stone, how many dropped balls on well thrown passes were there tonight?! But in an effort to stay positive, I have faith that they will bounce back! Booty showed great poise and control, and please dont complain about the 1 batted pass.

Cant wait for Pac 10 play to begin next week!!!

RT, you're an idiot. You are from the same school of thought that jumped on this bandwagon half way through the 2004 season. If you can't see dominance on the field then choose another sport. Try soccer. 0-0 scores are very pretty common there.

Second, does anyone have an explanation as to why USC did not get the ball to start the second half? They kicked off both at the start of the game and the start of the second half. I have never seen that happen.

PERFECT DAY!

SC wins 49-31

fUCLA loses 44-6

ND loses 38-0

SC elected to kick off after Nebraska won the toss and Nebraska chose to take the second half kickoff. It seemed to be an odd choice by SC to give Nebraska an extra possession.

As I mentioned on another insidesocal blog;

Memo to Bruce Davis: When you tell people "we're a national power now" you have to at least win the Utah State Championship.

Looks like Scott Wolf was even being generous in where he ranked you Bruins.

Thanks for explaining why we kicked twice! And yeah, Nebraska fan is all class. I think anyone who watched the game knows it wasn't half as close as the score. I also think that Nebraska will prove to be a pretty good team this year, which will help us later. And one more thing... Booty is not going to have a Heisman year this year. Ausberry seems disengaged on the field and Turner couldn't catch a cold. There's only so much Fred Davis can help Booty's case.

Stafon Johnson had an awesome game. Too bad that Brent Musburger(S?) can't even get his name right,-- "Stafon Jackson." BTW nice tie Musburger...

USC looked awesome tonight. Just awesome.

Sure, sure-there are a bunch of things that could have looked better, but there always are. I'll take tonight's showing against any team in the country right now.

RT I don't want to pile on but you're an idiot.

The difference between USC and other teams and the chief reason why USC doesn't rebuild but reload is that when USC is up 42 to 10 they get their young players valuable playing time in tough environments on the road rather than try to rack up style points.

Pete took out most of the defensive starters in the 3rd to give his bench guys a lot of playing time. On the other hand Callahan left his starters in till the end so that they feel good about themselves in scoring 21 points against USC's 3rd string D. USC's defense is getting better, Nebraska's defense is gaining false hope.

SCStrategies Author Profile Page said:

I agree that the Nebraska points in the 4th quarter are meaningless but it is a bit frustrating that I'll have to hear from a bunch of SEC friends who didn't even watch that game that we "barely" beat Nebraska while LSU pitched another shut out.

Musberger looked medicated. Herbstreit seemed to be trying to keep him awake. Best line of the night, though, "USC took care of business."

Very proud our defense caught a couple of balls. I was worried their hands were all made of wood. Keith Rivers should have had two picks.

Timing getting better with the receivers. They seemed a couple of inches off on several early passes...although I can't help but think Smith, Jarrett, and Bush would've somehow come up with those balls Johnson and Turner missed.

Great for Stafon!

Kris Freakin' O'Dowd!!! Game ball goes to him. What a show by a true freshman. Great performances too by all the running backs. Wish I could've seen the confused look on those rednecks faces when Havili started motioning out to the slot: "What is that there Fullback doin' linin' up out yonder where the Wide Recievers usually play? Oh I reckon scorin' a touchdown!"

AlwaysBeatND summed it best; what a Saturday trifecta. The pass defense needs a little work against the short, underneath patterns (those first half slant patterns were killing us), but the “D” against the run was just incredible. The “D” was exploding off of the ball all night long, and on just a couple of occasions, they were a tick too late from ripping Keller’s head off.

What can you say about the run game? Stafon (WELCOME TO USC). C.J. and Stanley looked great, and when he finally got the chance to run the ball, even Chauncey was really solid. Please, please no more Desmond in he back field. He’s had a really good USC career, but the back field now belongs (at this moment) to Stafon, C.J., Stanley and Chauncey. Everyone needs to give a big shout out to the “O” line, especially the freshmen, Kris O’Dowd (how long before he is named an All-American). Those wholes that he and the rest of the “O” were opening were just HUGE.

And for everybody worried about the passing game, don’t. While it was not at its best, it didn’t need to be. JD did enough without making any mistakes and looked really solid. I think that his arm strength has improved (he looked like he had more zip on the ball than ever before). PT, please catch the ball (he had two drops that should been catches, but no worries, he looked solid on a couple other receptions). The “O” is still just a tick behind the “D” right now, but once they get it all together, OH MY!

One big concern still is the INJURIES. I’m glad to hear that both Vincent and Alfred are going to be okay (the Joseph injury looked scary for a little while). On a bright side during the Joseph injury, that was such a heads up play by Malcolm Smith. That play helped to change the flow of the game. Tell me that older brother Steve was not smiling in NY last night when saw his baby brother.

Fight On!

Maybe this is a question for Open Forum, but what is up with Allen Bradford's runs? That touchdown was a solid run and stiff arm, but he keeps getting pounded behind in the line on everything else.

Is this a function of the play-calling or his vision, speed and anticipation?

Geoff Author Profile Page said:

Blowout? Yeah, the bRuins got abosultely demolished by a sad Utah squad playing with its backup quarterback, backup running back, backup receiver, backup guard.

Love this quote from a competing publication:

"That last touchdown drive they came out on the field and they were whining and crying. And we just kept driving the ball down the field. They lost their composure... That's an overrated team."

I honestly can't think of anything worse to have said about you as a football player. Nice work Utah.

Geoff Author Profile Page said:

Oh, sorry Scott -- you must be referring to the "blowout" in Ann Arbor. NCAA Division II Michigan (they are aren't they?) played like absolute crap and still took 'ol Charlie out to the tool shed and beat the Domers silly.

Notre Dame hasn't scored an offensive touchdown in the past 12 quarters, 14 if you include last season (and five consecutive losses, if you do the same). And ND has lost these past five games by 20, 27, 30, 21 and 38 points.

well let's take it easy on the "idiot" word...

I think what they are saying is that the SEC fans will come back with:

"Yeah but nebraska got 31 points! 31 is 31! LSU shut out VT and..."

You know the intelligence level of loud mouth arrogant SEC fans..

USC1966 Author Profile Page said:

Also SCStrategies other post is good...

If you watched Bradford, he got pounded on the last series, was mad as hell and stormed to the sidelines and gave PC a look like "I am gonna kill your children"

Someone better talk to that young man, and throw himi a bone out there and get him some meaningful carries.

USC1966 Author Profile Page said:

And yeah, that's the only thing that concerned me..what has happened to PT? He dropped 2 passes that would of been first downs, and they immediatley yanked him and put Ausberry in..

llong001 Author Profile Page said:

I thought it was a great game. However, I thought that there were too many holes in our secondary and our passing game needs to improve.

Just got back from Nebraska. The game was not even as close as the final score indicated. Booty is a good, but not great, QB. He won't win the Heisman this year, unless the USC PR machine is in full force. Otherwise, expect someone like Colt Brennan to walk away with the trophy in Manhattan.

I am not too thrilled with either ucla or ND getting blown out. It hurts our strength of schedule and is also bad for our rivalries. We need our marquee games to be against strong competition so the games mean something nationally.

Our biggest hurdle this year will be Cal. Only team that has the talent and coaching to take us out.

We kicked off twice. Nebraska won the toss and deferred. We should have taken the opening kickoff but the toin toss guys got confused and elected to kick instead of receive. Pete Carroll said the players indicated the way it was stated, to them was a bit confusing.

Took the red eye from Omaha last night. Some observations of Nebraska: yeah, Nebraska fans are classy but the students(read: 20 year old drunken males) are just as profane and stupid as kids on any other American campus...the fans barely booed the Trojans when they took the field... I was surrounded by Big Red fans, and they all welcomed me nicely (No students)...it was almost shocking how over 90% of the fans wore Nebraska red gear...even at 35-10 the crowd was still in it; however at 42-10 they were pretty much done...they did not boo their team at any point in the game...their scoreboard is the best!

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis.
