Four-Year Starter
Center Kris O'Dowd is not overwhelmed by the prospect of being a four-year starter at USC.
"My goal was to get some playing time this year, but when Matt (Spanos) went down, it was my turn," O'Dowd said. "Now I'm feeling pretty comfortable starter, it could be (four years)."
I'll go ahead and be the first to get ahead of themselves when talking about a guy who's stated one game.
Does anyone know if college football has a history of a center going pro early?
Kris O. is also a walking ad for USC that true Freshmen can not only get immediate playing time, but even start if the breaks go your way.
I heard C Weis is going to start playing his young recruits too. USC may play a totally different Irish team come 10/20.
While it is dangerous to extrapolate from one game, the holes in the middle of the line were huge! Carroll said O'Dowd has a "motor" and never quits on a play. He said that, at times this year, you will see O'Dowd blocking downfield 40-50 yards (presumably on a long run). If he is THAT GOOD, he may only be a three year starter.

Pete was actually talking about Jeff Byers when he made the comments about blocking 40-50 yards down field, etc (see his press conference quotes on the official USC athletics site). He said O'Dowd made some errors, but is pleased with his progress overall.
Overwhelmed?? Who the hell would be against playing rather than riding the bench? Four LONG years?? And you don't think this guy has his eye on the NFL?? oooooh! That could be 5 or 6 years of playing time. he must be really overwhelmed. Give me a break!
The motor comments and blocking 40-50 yds down field were indeed about Byers.
The guy was banged up so much I forgot how great of an O-lineman he is. If he can stay healthy USC will be in great shape all year
in moving the ball.
