Hail Caesar!

But don't forget Howard Jones either. Impressive as Pete Carroll's recent record is, let's compare how Howard Jones started out at USC. In Jones' first nine seasons (1925-1933), USC won three national championships and never had more than two blemishes (losses and/or ties) in any one year. The championships came in years four (1928), seven (1931) and eight (1932).
This is the same Howard Jones who must share equal billing on the practice field sign with a donor.

Apples and oranges...football was a different animal back then, thus it is impossible to compare eras. Still, Jones was ahead of his time in those days, right up there with that guy from Notre Dame.

...so, you're inferring that Pete Carroll isn't really that good of a coach?

Well, I'm sold! I'll try and remember to boo the coach at the game tomorrow.

Oh Scott...you're so noble and altruistic. sticking up for Coach Jones and the soft serve-machine in the face of the money grubbing mustache-twisting machine. You're so noble. we love you. thanks for being you...and bringing the people the inside scoop on...manchester united. there's nothing that gets me quite as stiff as a flaming reporter taking shots at freshmen football players. please give me a call and we can discuss.
douchebag.

Scott,

Are you kidding me with this? Are you really comparing football in the 20's and the era of unlimited scholarships to the current era of limited scholarships and parity? This might be your most ridiculous post yet.

I do agree that Howard Jones deserves more recognition around campus though.

I am NOT a Scott fan and most of you know it BUT as much as I like PC I am leaning toward Jones. It is a tough choice and at the end you can't be wrong going either way.
Thanks

Football in those days with no helmets, and later leather fly boy caps cannot be compared anywhere near today's athlete. You would be better off comparing rugby teams or cricket.

I believe Wolf's intent was noting that Howard Jones Filed shares that moniker with a corporate sponsor i.e. what respect is tendered the original coach of prowess that put USC in the map when his very name on the practice field is matched up with 'Kinko's' or whatever name is affixed to the outside of the field. Even the Los Angeles Angels' owner Arte Moreno understood any money paid by a sponsor for signage rights would always negate the effort he (Moreno) has made in nationally having the Angels recognized as 'Los Angeles'.

BTW ever noticed what a bunch of suckups to vin-dawg skullman the Daily News is in insisting on their 'up to the minute' scoreboard cites the Angels as LAA but Brooklyn as LA? Funny how they (Daily News) identify the Clippers as LAC and the Lakers as LAL - O'Malley's con job never ends i.e. McCourt's gratis towards the Daily News sports desk which is why they (Daily News) will always be eating the Times dust.
