Kicking It
USC kicked off twice against Nebraska because after the Huskers won the opening toss, the Trojans mistakenly asked to "kick."
A stunned ref asked the Trojans again and was told, "kick."
So USC kicked off twice.

that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Someone needs to be fired for that...

Add that to the list of lessons hopefully learned along with:
1. PT's missed catches
2. McKnight's Fumbles
3. Rey's Disconcerting
Also was anyone else miffed at Buehler's short kickoff to start the gam? Nothing like handing the home underdog great field position to start the game.

I did the same thing in an intramural game, and it's a mistake you never forget.
I partially blame EA's NCAA football game which strives for reality down the the nth detail except when you win the toss you're asked if you want to kick or receive.
Anyways, I'm sure that detail won't be overlooked for a long time and it didn't hurt the team in the least.

There were three things the now-defunct XFL did right:
1. He Hate Me
2. Tommy Maddox (even if he was a Bruin)
3. The scramble to begin the game.
Oh, and cheerleaders in the hot tub gets an honorable mention.

Those were Big 12 refs, right?
I was dropping F bombs like crazy after that Disconcerting call..
It didn't sound like the coaches were that upset at Rey. More like surprised.
How 'bout those Bruins!

Scott,
Is there a site you can look at to check how many times "disconcerting" was ever called in a game?
I was a little bit shocked with Buehler's short kick to start but I wrote it off to nervous energy. He's got it out of his system now.
Not like it mattered.
PT dropped a few catches but I'm not gonna write the guy off like some are doing. He was hurt the last two weeks. Didn't practice till 2 days before travelling and it showed. If he's still dropping passes by week 5/6 though then all bets are off.

Don't worry so much about the two kickoffs. Pete likes to kick off the start the game. Remember, in a hostile environment it is much easier to play defense than offense. The crowd isn't going to try and drown out your checks and calls because they want to allow their offense the proper environment so they can audible. If you come out and shut down the offense it puts the crowd on its hands for when you take the field on your own 4 yard line. Most times when we win the coin toss we defer as well. That creates a problem for the other captain; as we all saw Saturday night when you usually like to get your defense on the field first.

If you want to blame Rey Rey for anything, it should be that hit on PT's shoulder. I wonder if he's a little gun shy about taking hits after that one. If you want to know how long it takes to get over a Malaluga hit, ask Patrick Cowan. He just shook it off five minutes ago and is heading to the UCLA huddle as we speak.

I love how ESPN/ABC always shows that hit during promos. That was the one silver lining of the UCLA debacle (that and keeping Dorrell around for a few more years)

The 13-9 loss dealt USC a huge blow and probably cost the Trojans another NC.
Bruins earned the right to celebrate the upset win.
But 9 months later, USC has another #1 team and appears ready to challenge for yet another BCS CG. The future is bright and the prospects are limitless.
Meanwhile, Westwood appears stuck with Dorrell for the rest of this decade and the program looks to be in total disarray after the inexcusable Utah loss. Great article in the San Jose News today about how USC, Cal, and Oregon are already better programs than UCLA. Now ASU and UW with proven coaches are set to catch and pass UCLA in tackle football.
13-9! The glory is fading fast.
Fight On!
