Prevailing Wisdom

We've been asking around about why USC did not dominate Idaho more last Saturday.
One theory is the game was treated like an NFL exhibition game, with the Trojans substituting liberally throughout the game.
One Pac-10 coach only partially bought the theory.
"Some of the big guys were inconsistent too," he said.

I'm sure both are true. Booty was not his usual accurate self. He left at least one or two TD's on the field. The defensive effort could be called ho-hum the second quarter. 4th quarter was a wash, but still they should have never been able to run on us like that. Terell Thomas didn't have one of his better games for sure. But, likewise, it was run like one of their practices. I have been to quite a few, and I can attest to that accuracy. It was like an NFL pre-season game. Used more for evaluation than anything else.

Although I left the Coliseum plenty disappointed about the performance on Saturday night, I too have taken some time and looked at the truth of what happened. Playing 64 guys was obviously the emphasis in the game plan. There was a lot of evaluation going on, you could tell. My issue was that personnel groupings were changing so fast there was no continuity and very little actual game playing. It was like a kid with a brand new toy but they kid had no idea how it worked. He knew it was cool and knew that he was going to love it, but he wanted to try everything right away and sometimes what was supposed to happen just couldn't.
I also honestly think that the game was not played at the highest level of intensity. There was no angst against Idaho, even with the cheap hits happening on the field. It was almost as if the staff didn't want to beat up poor Idaho too bad so they just put the governor on the whole engine so that nothing to bad would happen. Being more of a blood thirsty type I was hoping for more domination and destruction. I guess we didn't win the National Championship on Saturday, but we didn't lose it either.

Well, I agree some of it was just not being challenged and some of it was the reserves playing.
HOWEVER, that said, there are some areas of concern. The first area is Booty, with any sort of pressure he was pretty poor. He looked like an average QB out there on Sat night.
The second concern is that every single misdirection play run against this defense seems to work. Far too much overpursuit by the DEs and by the rest of the defense as well.
The third concern which is very major is the CB play. Aside from Shareece Wright the CBs were horrible. They let slow, short, receivers get behind them slip bumps, and generally make catches all night. Terrell Thomas looked horrible out there. Mozique McCurtis was even worse.
The other area of concern is the turnovers. This team drops far too many potential interceptions. Rivers for one missed one right in his hands. It's why the turnovers were down last year as well.

Other than those issues, which are really minor in the grand scheme, this is a very good team that should they survive Nebraska will come together around the 4th or 5th game and become a SUPER GOOD team.

Should we beat Nebraska the sky is the limit.

Who is the Pac 10 coach who said this? I'm sure it wasn't said in confidence, or did you get the statement from one of your many, many "sources."

Also, maybe because it was the first game of the year it was not to be expected to be a top-notch performance. But it was better than Notre Dame's and Michigan's.

I wonder what ND, Michigan, and Tennessee fans are saying on their blog sites this week?

AfFter the first 3 drives, YAWNNNN!!!!

Great tributes!!
