An Even Dozen

Michael Thomas of Arizona had 12 receptions for 83 yards and no touchdowns. He becomes the fifth player with 12 or more catches against USC. Curiously, none of the five had a receiving touchdown against the Trojans. In fact, three of these five did not even gain 100 yards.
Here's the top five: (Two of which came against Caesar).

Braxton Cleman 10-19-2002 Washington Home 15 69 0
DeRonnie Pitts 10-21-2000 Stanford Away 13 176 0
Dameane Douglas 10-10-1998 California Home 13 151 0
Dane Looker 10-31-1998 Washington Home 12 84 0
Michael Thomas 10-13-2007 Arizona Home 12 83 0

Scott, I actually don't think those stats are that curious. Carroll's bend but don't break zone defense philosphy tends to give up receptions and sometimes yards but not touchdowns. That is the whole philosophy of the defense. Give up the middle of the field and when the game is in hand, give up garbage points in exchange for minuts off the clock. That is why I always think its deceptive to judge Carroll's defense solely by statistics such as yardage and points allowed. You need to understand the context of the yards and the points to determine if they are playing good defense.

I don't find it curious at all.

I would love to see a stat that tells us how many big pass plays of 25+ yards USC has given up under PC. I don't remember many off the top of my head. Scott could you investigate it?

Come on, Tyler. the only thing Scott ever investigates is when he suspects a player might be thinking of transferring. No one will ever accuse Scott of being an investigative reporter, or any kind of reporter.

Scott Wolf

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
