Debut Comparison
Here's how Mark Sanchez's debut compares to Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and John David Booty. Impressively, none of those three threw an interception in their first game.
UPDATED: These stats were supplied to all media by USC sports information office. I posted them because I figured the readers would be interested. But as usual, I see the first commenters could not simply process the information. Will they get mad at USC now?
Carson Palmer 1998 (Washington)
18-31 58 percent 279 yards 1 TD O INT
Matt Leinart 2003 (Auburn)
17-30 57 percent 192 yards 1 TD 0 INT
John David Booty 2006 (Arkansas)
24-35 67 percent 261 yards 3 TDs 0 INT
Mark Sanchez 2007 (Arizona)
19-31 61 percent 130 yards 1 TD 2 INT

Gee Scott, what about the facts you left out, like all but Sanchez made their debuts at the beginning of the season after working with the first team through spring and summer. If you are going to compare, make it a fair comparison. Do my eyes deceive me or do I see you in the crowd jumping off the bandwagon?
Leinart and Booty had healthy offensive lines plus dependable receivers NOT to mention Norm Chow for OC. How about those factors Mr. Scott Wolfe?
Thank you

Leinart also had White and Bush. There isn't a White NOR a Bush on this team.
Thank you
In support of Wolf, you guys are being waaay too critical. He was just making a comparison - there were no smartass remarks that we normally see in this blog.
Sanchez is 1-0 as a starter. That is the only stat that matters. He showed heart, and was trying to fire up the crowd. He made some good plays, and some bad ones, as expected. One piece of advice, Mr. Sanchez, TUCK THE BALL WHEN YOU ARE SCRAMBLING. We are very lucky that the ball did not get poked out on his 3rd and long scramble inside the 5-yd line.
Still, a win is a win. As crazy as this year has been, we are still in the NC hunt. (Whether this team can capitalize is a different story.) We need to get healthy. The OL is decimated. Notre Dame will be a tough game next week...another defensive struggle.
FIGHT ON!!
jbs07: Not waaay too critical, just asking/expecting Wolfie to be credible in his so-called comparisons (which smell, er, smack of his apparent disdain for the team and its coaches, especially PC, who, by the way, are the very ones that got us to the NC's in the first place) Fair weather fans all of them.
Scott: Just read your excuse (ahem - update). Shame on you for publishing those stats then, without any commentary yourself regarding the fact that Sanchez' debut came under wholly different circumstances than the other named QB's. That would have been credible commentary, and fair to Sanchez and the team.
I agree with USCmike. Sanchez is 1-0 as a starter. He was playing with a porous O-Line and he made his first start midseason amid a storm of frustration & confusion with this team. He played with heart, fire and intensity. Something this team sorely lacked and especially at QB.
Our new motto is
Mark Sanchez=shot in the arm!
Sanchez is completely out of his league and proved it last night. USC won because of Joe McKnight, with help from Ronald Johnson.
Sanchez is a liability. We need Booty back ASAP.
Sanchez helped Mustain's case more tonight than anything he could have done.
Sanchez is turnover machine
Sanchez is not up the job at the college level. He struggled all day. Everything you see in practice was seen in a game situation. Beating a very poor Arizona team by only seven points, when the spread was 21, summed up Sanchez's struggles. There could have been six interceptions if Arizona's defense had better hands, yet Sanchez still managed to get two throws intercepted. Too many incompletes and sacks. Sanchez is not the future of the program. He is, at best, simply a serviceable QB against scrubs.
neilson:
Didn't JDB throw 4 INT's against Stanford? USC had a healthier OL against Washington and Stanford than against AZ. Is your memory back to normal now? I forgot you are an usual suspect/MM faithful. It is obvious. Rest my case.
The four interceptions, the stinky games against Idaho, UW and UCLA last year... I think you have a point door prize. Mark Sanchez's mobility saved the game today. With JDB this would have been a second loss that would have had us looking down a year end visit at the Tidy Bowl.
Sanchez just plain stunk. The only way to win with Sanchez until Booty comes back is to rely on the running game and take Sanchez out of the equation. If Sanchez is limited to handoffs, USC can win. If he throws, a certain USC loss. He has no accuracy and can't read a defense at all.
The Sanchez experiment not only failed miserably but was also a complete joke. I bet Booty and Mustain were laughing on the sidelines!!!! As Scott correctly pointed out, Sanchez does not have much in the way of talent and if he does not have any talent by this stage, he never will. When Sanchez started being booed by the crowd, you knew he had lost his opportunity.
When is the last time USC ever came back from a 4th quarter deficit......I thought Sanchez showed alot of guts and poise. Just what this shallow bunch needed. The OLine is barely holding up. No running game and SC still wins. I think we should all pat him on the back. Mustain isn't gonna be given a chance till next year. And thats if he beats out Sanchez and Corp. Good luck, until then.....Fight On and Beat the Irish.
Sanchez played great!! Just say that you don't like him, not that he faild miserably. The first INT was not his fault, ROJO needs to get a hand on the ball on that play not quit when he know that he can't catch it. The second one was his fault, but I don't know why in the hell Sark is still calling those 3 step drop plays!! I have never seen one work!! He played very well with all the O_line injuries and the TD pass was sick!!! Good posters like Tyler, PH55, and Laywer John can see this Thomas you are a dumb A$$!!!!
Sanchez is pitiful. What other options do we have until Booty is back? What about McDonald or Green?
LBC ROB: coming back from a 3 point deficit is hardly a sign of genius. It is a sign of how great McKnight is, though, when the coaches let him play. USC won this game because of McKnight, not Sanchez. With Booty, USC would have won by at least 20 points, not 7.
USC Larry: McKnight did not score, just set up the scores. Booty, Davis, Washington did the rest. These guys are a team and give them all credit. They stayed together.
Sanchez haters understand this. Mark Sanchez as the QB USC is UNDEFEATED.
Considering that this was Sanchez's first game and all the injuries he had a good game. Everyone is so quick to talk smach about Sanchez but no one ever says anything about Booty. Booty is not a leader he has been our starter for a year and a half and still fails to come up with the skills to follow in Leinarts and Palmers footsteps. Booty is apathetic and Sanchez has heart! I'd go with Sanchez any day. And all you bloggers that are talking smack about Sanchez need to calm down this was his first start and he got a win.
This is from today's Daily News story by Scott:
"The biggest thing we learned is Mark has a lot of stuff to learn and cleanup," Carroll said. "He needs to improve his reads and getting rid of the ball and not getting sacked, but he brings a lot of energy."
So I guess Carroll doesn't know what he's talking about either, right? Sanchez is just all around awful and Carroll knows it.
