Forget The Quarterback
The main focus for a couple weeks is whether John David Booty or Mark Sanchez should play quarterback.
But the bigger problem all season is the stubborn refusal to shake up the tailback rotation.
Does USC really deserve to be higher than 19th in the BCS rankings when it continues to settle for 4.4 yards per carry from the starting spot?
I put this question to Pete Carroll last Monday and he said he was happy with the current rotation for the rest of the season (some of you mistakenly thought this was because Stafon Johnson was hurt but the answer also applied to when Johnson is 100 percent).
I'm guessing most defensive coordinators who face USC are thrilled Joe McKnight was developed too slowly and Allen Bradford remained on the bench. All summer, we referred to the need to stretch defenses and it rarely happened from the tailback spot.
And that's the biggest reason USC sits 19th. It's a CD (coaches' decision).

Why is Allen Bradford not playing? I smell a transfer in the future?

Wolfie, YES, well done. I don't agree with the details, but THANK YOU for not mailing it in like most sportswriters, and digging deeper for a more meaningful analysis. The 5-minute, don't understand football, not a dedicated fan analysis is turnovers and QB controversy. Bullsh*t, our problems are the result of other factors, and the poor management/development of the tailbacks is ONE of the big ones. I am beginning to really buy into what most RBs will tell you....they need lots of carries to get into their rhythm. Perfect example was Jonathan Stewart yesterday.....held in check or stuffed much of the day, but kept plugging away, and popped some CRITICAL runs in the 2nd half. Find a racehorse, and feed that racehorse. I now wish that we had held back 1 or 2 of those RB scholarships and used them on O-lineman or CB/safeties. Or, a special teams coach....oh, wait, they are paid, not students, sorry.
Chauncey is a nice story and a decent RB, but Stafon, CJ and Moody are all much more talented. We had bad luck with Stafon & CJ injuries and wasted Moody and Bradford's scholarships (IMO). Next year, let's drop the "superstar rotation", or lack thereof, and develop a racehorse with some consistency early in the season.
Nice post, Wolfie.

I, also, don't understand why Bradford doesn't play more. He's been in about 4 plays in his USC career and has done tons more than Joe McKnight in that time.
Bench #4 now! Play #21 more!

Oregon's offensive scheme looks innovative and taylored, as if it were designed to take advantage of the skills Dixon and Stewart have. Our offensive scheme, with the exception of that 4th down debacle at the beginning of the game, seems designed to be there and for the kids to play it. With Sanchez, he's a hell of a scrambler and you know he just wants to go out and level someone. But it's like the coaches have put a stoplight on that. I can't think of one instance where patience scrambling around back there got him anything in that game.

Petingtong,
I think you misunderstand Scott's post. He's not suggesting that Joe be benched. To do that would be silly. He's the one player that has any true breakaway threat at the RB position.
He is however suggesting that Chauncey be put down for the rest of the season and I would tend to agree.
I'm starting to believe that the problems with USC is that PC is so concerned about not making errors that he's unwilling to throw the young guys into the fire the way he did with Reggie and Lendale their freshman years. Let them fumble, let them learn through mistakes. It certainly beats this play it safe offense USC is running now. Let Sanchez sling it all over the field. Even if he throws 2 ints throwing it downfield it puts the fear of the deep ball into the minds of USC's opponents.

I appreciate when Wolf gives a well spoken opinion rather than a one-shot quip. I believe it creates a better forum.

Tyler,
You are right. However, I was merely voicing my own opinion on McKnight.
I stand by my comment that McKnight should not get more playing time than Bradford. He has not earned it nor proved it like Bradford has.

Yeah, I think Jeff Fisher agrees with you on that trojanman. Look at LenDale White the last three weeks. 25, 27 and 25 carries. 64, 103 and 133 yards (career best). 2.6, 3.9 and 5.3 yards per carry.

A sure sign of the apocalypse? Wolf makes a clear, cogent point with no sarcasm, stupid nicknames, or references to MM.
I can hardly believe it. I can also hardly believe that I agree with Wolf. "Stubborn refusal" is right. PC seems to be more concerned with loyalty to older players (CW) than he is to putting the best product out on the field.
Can't say I agree with Petingtong's point though. Bench #4? Why??? He's just starting to hit his stride. Dude rumbles for a long touchdown (called back by a slightly dubious holding penalty. Yes, he had a hold of his jersey, but I don't think he was stopping him from going anywhere) and you want to put him on the bench? I'm not sure I understand that logic. Joe McKnight appears to be just what the doctor ordered for USC's offense. A legitimate breakaway threat that not even Sark's painfully conservative game-plan can contain.
So in closing, keep it Wolf. I think your readers truly enjoy insightful posts that lack the sarcastic slant that normally accompany your web posts. This kind of thing... I could get used to.

McKnight hits a hole like a ballet dancer waiting for his music cue. Once loose he's great, but coaching cannot produce the incredible courage it takes to be a running back these days. The 235 pound Stewart is the stud of the PAC10 and maybe the country, and remember that he's been hurt for two years. BTW, Belotti's drunken wife and his son with an illegal scholarship could help Carroll by turning the spotlight north. And Norm Chow anyone???
