I have resisted this excuse for years; especially against Stanford: you figure if those guys do anything well on the field it would be to follow directions. And for years I have been suspect of the PAC10 being headquartered in Cal's backyard where anyone with a blue and gold rugby shirt and a drinking problem is waved in as a legacy. But when we are getting facemask calls while on offense or holding calls where the umpire does not bother to mention the number of the player that commited the foul, I think it becomes fairly obvious.

I don't think Pete is making excuses. USC has a lot to lose by being perceived as a declining program right now. Factors like injuries, unfair penalties, etc. should be emphasized if relevant. Many of the talking heads on ESPN have been citing injuries as a reason for USC's slippage.
Way better than the coaching sucks or talent is absent.

All the great NBA coaches work the referees when they perceive calls are lopsidedly against their teams. Once again PC is ahead of the game. The holding call on Baker was huge last game. What close calls are coming vs. Cal and ASU on the road?

One theory is that teams bring their "A" game against SC, and part of bringing your "A" game as the underdog is understanding you have to try and play mistake-free football. To me, this stat reflects the reality that every week SC will face the best effort of the season from the opponent.

One advantage of TIVOing the games is being able to go back again and again to the same play and check penalties. Sometimes they are good calls, and sometimes they are totally bogus. LJ has been called for encroachment a couple of times this year when he just came off the ball so fast the official couldn't believe it so he threw his flag. Bogus calls, and there are others. But, I agree with PC; when you're at the top you have to deal with it.

BTW: How would you like Stoopes (AZ) on the sideline? Incredible cry-baby! I can't believe they actually pay that guy to do that!

Seriously 1966...as an ex-college athlete, you're the type of fan that made me sick to my stomach...you're the fan that will walk around pounding your chest that we won and gloat about it, and then when the team doesn't allow you to do that week in and week out, you'll be first one to jump off the bandwagon and throw the team under the bus with the rest of the wannabe monday morning qb's. I can understand constructive criticism, but all you do is cry and moan. How many teams can say they've had a run like SC has the past few years??
