Practice Report

John David Booty enjoyed a better than expected practice and surprised Pete Carroll. But he still has swelling in his finger and the ball sometimes sails because of the injury.
Mark Sanchez looks on track to start (no promises!).
Sam Baker practiced and will play. Drew Radovich sat out with a sore back. Joe McKnight got hit in the back but is OK.

I really hope Mark Sanchez will make the start. If JDB starts, he is going to have to play 'catch-up', and he will end the game with a tipped pass/interception.
It has happened numerous times before.

Oh man; I didn’t want to have to pull out “My DIXON, your broken Booty”!!!

Sorry guys just thought I would prepare you for the kind of shirts and signs you’re going to see at Autzen. Does this fall under good natured sports rivalry or is the what you mean by "no class bunch"? I think it's funny (even if sick) and I'm sure glad it's not the other way around.

Who hit Joe? Is this another one of those competition wednesdays; beat up the beaten up?

Maybe it is time to have some less intense practices and try to minimize any further injuries.

They're supposed to block the kicking team in the back illegally, not their own returner.

well, at least with this injury he has a reason why the ball sails over the receiver, as opposed to all the other times when he just throws it poorly.....

where can i get some of the drugs that the people who claimed he was Heisman material were taking? i can't seem to find them in my neighborhood.... %-)

What has happened numerous times? Are you trying to say Booty has had numerous passes tipped and lost the game for us? If I recall he was the one who brought us back to lose by just 2 last year to OSU. And ya he had one tipped and intercepted against ucla. If anyone has watched the few games Jesus... oops I mean Sanchez has had numerous balls tipped. Why no comments about those? Oh cause we played ND jv that's why. Booty is a good qb, and will be a good pro. I for one have not forgotten his loyalty and dedication and oh his dominance of Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Booty will come back and prove everyone wrong in the next few weeks.

I bet athletes don't read the papers much, let along these sports blogs, because with the amount of criticism they receive they would have a difficult time even suiting up for the game. And don't dare lose a game, athletes, because the fans are so invested in the team they will take it personally, and then you will not hear the last of it. Gee, no wonder people in the public eye (politicians and actors as well) are often so emotionally challenged. I say forgeddabout the public, just go out and do your best, and then go home and get a good night's sleep.

On another subject, and my last comment to Duckmann91 because I am hitting the road for 1000 miles to see the Eastern High Sierras, the fall colors, and oh yeah, a football game in Eugene. No, people don't refer to Ducks' fans as "no class" because they like to poke fun at players' names (although 'My Dixon' is a bit over the top, isn't it?) No class refers to the fact that there is prevalent a criminal element i.e. ready to strike another person, at Autzen that is not visible in any other stadium I have attended. That said, there are certainly some great Oregon fans, but about 25% are flat-out dangerous, and I am not talking about just the 18-35 year old males either. Enough said! Get on with this game, because I am jacked.

Fair enough. You are entitled to your opinion, and for my part, I promise to be a gentleman as it is my nature. These are my final thoughts: A police friend of mine told me that just over 200 people are escorted out of the stadium every game for inappropriate behavior (mostly alcohol related). This is a far cry from your 25% (15,000) that are “criminal”. I’m sure that they don’t catch all of the scallywags (love that word) but don’t you think that it is possible that your perception of the quantity of bad apples is colored by the intensity of ranker and venom spewed by a few a## holes. I will concede that we have our share. Just a thought and safe travels.

Besides the expected rowdy UO students, I'm betting most of the troublemakers are rural mouth-breathers who never attend the university. Probably alot of unemployed and frustrated lumberjacks mad at the California treehuggers and pissed off that flannel shirts are no longer in style.

Or they may be upset that their women either have huge "thunders" or are not too friendly with a Lady Bic 10 months out of the year.

Yeah I have to admit I have not heard good things about Oregon fans...from Bellotti mouthing "Fuc* you" to Pete Carroll across the field to the fans throwing beer bottles at USC people attending..it seems like a zoo..

just beat them and get in and out

Actually TNT, the majority of Oregon residents are ex-Californians who left the state because it was going into the crapper: rapidly becoming a kind of modern Sodom and Gomorra. We expect the san andreas fault to break off at any moment now. It’s not too late to leave, hurry while you can still get out. Remember not to look back!

And USC1966 if you check the tape on that game you will see that PC mouthed FU to Bellotti after he challenged a TD call. I believe it was 3 "F" bombs. Real classy.

Pretty funny stuff, T&T, but like most stereotypes, not completely true. I pick on men only, and I say 25% of males are dangerous because they are likely to strike you over words only if they perceive a slight. And despite popular opinion, insulting words, no matter how profane, are not sufficient provocation to physically assault one. Well, that works great in Court, but not so well when surrounded by like-minded crazed fanatics i.e. sports fans, who will back up one of their own kind.

But back to T&T-- I have been to Oregon many times, and the ladies are fine.

Yep, definitely was Pete telling Bellotti what he thought after Bellotti challenged the overturned call on a challenged play, thereby halting the game for more than 25 minutes. I have never seen anyone do that, and was thinking the same thing Pete was mouthing. Obviously that is not normal Pete Carroll, and his emotions got the best of him that day.

As for this Autzen fans debate, I always have a great time going up there. The fans can be bad, particularly in 2005. When we were down at halftime in 2005 I almost got killed. I couldn't even wait in line to use the bathroom without 1,000 different people screaming F U in my face and trying to start a fight. That said, I had a far WORSE time in Corvallis last year. After we lost, at least 20 rednecks pushed us and used the typical insults so dumb that I won't even recount them. I thought I was going to get dragged behind a pickup truck. Even the girls were saying some pretty...colorful things. Bottom line: While Autzen is pretty hostile, more than I would expect for a generally hippie place like Euguene, it is one of the greatest places I have ever seen a game. The atmosphere is fun. Corvallis, on the other hand, was a nightmare. I know I probably just made a lot of Oregon fans happy, but that's just my opinion. I think the least classy fans in the Pac 10 are Cal and OSU, from my own personal experiences (I'm excluding UCLA, because I realize they have nothing but pure hatred for us and can't be compared to those other schools in the same way).

Greengables- I think you are a closet Duck. Embrace it baby. You were born that way! Thanks for the props. Sorry about the FU's in the face.

I can’t wait to get up to Eugene to see a game. Autzen looks like a great atmosphere...and the Ducks have really developed into a great program. And Saturday should be a great game!

...and while I am sure Oregon fans are rowdy...try going to Colombus, Ohio for an Ohio State v. Michigan Game...with a Michigan alum. (not one of the brightest things I have ever done...but a terrifying/great experience nonetheless).

80 year old men were trying to throw down with my friend for wearing a Michigan hat. We also saw a car with Michigan plates flipped over when we were leaving the game. Talk about a fan base with anger management issues! Hopefully, the Buckeye fans will be a little more respectful when SC comes to Columbus in 2009!

Everyone who uses last year's OSU game as an example of Booty's greatness seems to conveniently forget that he threw a pick in the ENDZONE in the first quarter. That, combined with another knocked down pass in a critical situation kept us from completing the comeback! JDB is a great kid, and without pressure behind a healthy O-line, he throws a very nice ball. But, when the going gets tough and the pressure intensifies, he just doesn't have that X factor to take his game, and the team's game, to the next level. I truly believe that if Sanchez had been QB, he actually would have pulled off the OSU comeback, as well as found a way to win at UCLA. Let's not continue making the same mistakes and failing to see the obvious ability gap that is right in front of our eyes - Sanchez has something special that JDB just doesn't have. After Mark leads us to an incredibly awesome upset in Eugene and puts us back in the thick of the BCS race, Pete needs to name him starter for the rest of the season. Fight on! Beat the Ucks!

In the OSU game you are conveniently leaving out the two CW fumbles inside our own 20, without which, we would have won hands down without a doubt.

I don't know if Sanchez helps us win either of those games LAST YEAR. This year, maybe.

But you know what. It happened. Just like some very great things have gone our way in the past. Eric A's "catch" for the win and Johnny M's TD grab come immediately to mind.

How about this: the 17 point 4th Quarter meltdown against UCLA in '96--that was fun. Or how about the Cal Meltdown in the Coliseum, what was that, a 19 point lead? Or SDSU? We should be grateful for what we have and quit the complaining because what you think should have happened didn't.

Let's just go into Eugene, play SC football and see what happens. It should be a great game. I for one am looking forward to it.

Fight on1

Now this is how a "chatroom" should operate. Some good information and some good-natured ribbing. But one thing, respectthegame, Eric's catch may have not been legal, but SC was going to win that game even without it. And one final word on opposing crowds-- sometimes it just depends on who you are sitting next to, the luck of the draw. And I have learned not to shout too loudly for SC, and perhaps not wear my colors, when on foreign soil.

Duckwoman-
Most of our Cali ex-patriates go to the PNW because they can't make it in the Golden State. Or they are lured by taking their home equity and cashing out a house in Eugene or Corvallis.
The problem is they didn't know it actually rains every day or all the teenagers are Kurt Cobain without the talent. Whoops, now they can't afford to move back to CA and own a home.

Natural Disaster smack or quack is really admirable right now as many Californians have been decimated by wildfires.
You were probably the guy telling space shuttle jokes the night after Challenger crashed.

Can't wait until USC 's #1 defense shuts down your gimmick-laden offense.
Then once again you can return to logging, grunge rock, and trying to legalize herb.

There are plenty on SC alums here in Portland doing quite well who could easily go back to California if we wanted too, but life is pretty sweet up here. So before you lump all us SC grads up here as failures, perhaps you should see some of the world and realize that quality of life means different things to different people.

PS - No rain expected for the next week and grunge rock is as dead here as it is in LA.

TNT-I certainly meant no reference to the terrible disasters happening in Southern Ca now. I was just fighting back. The whole Nation is praying for all affected by the fires. My smack back was probably in poor taste and certainly ill-timed. To all offended by my careless comment I am sorry. As for your other comments, see Bruce's post.

My Addendum to California transplants moving to the PNW should have been as follows:

A small % of CA professionals, entrepeneurs, and industrialists move to the exclusive suburbs of Portland and Seattle to reside in wealthy enclaves. They quickly dominate the local infrastructure and rule the primitive indengenous peoples.

Most of these leaders have 'SC college rings,Trojan yard flags and a dog or cat named Traveler.

Or we live in inner SE and hate the burbs because if we wanted to live somewhere full of strip malls and dining options limited to the top 10 corporate brands we never would have left LA. I do have a SC ring though.

I commute 2 miles to work, own a nice home built in 1907, some of the best beer is made here and I'm an hour away from pristine and uncrowded hiking and camping.

Bruce, We may be neighbors. How bout a B.B. Porter sometime?

Tom Hanks had a nice house on the water in "Sleepless in Seattle."

Where was that house located?

Seattle rocks. I went to a U2 concert there at the old Kingdome in 1997. Great weekend in early December and I don't think it even rained! The beer and coffee were both unbelievable! I should have limited my disdain to Oregon college towns.

Ok, now you have fully exposed your ignorance. I'm done with you.

Ha! Seriously T&T, you need to get out of Newport Beach sometime.

I also loaded Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden onto my MP3 player this year.

I've been to Seattle, although not a seasoned visitor. Pikes Market, Space Needle, a couple of Microbreweries. And I did see U2 at the Kingdome in 1997. I also had a layover in SEA on my way to Vancouver.

Was it the Tom Hanks comment? I'm assuming that's Lake Seattle right?
maybe I should just stick to bashing Nebraska like TJ Simers.

It's OK TNT. Not everyone gets to go to college.

Ducksoup:

I actually attended a University that no longer has any kind of football program. However, the defunct program actually produced 2 of the top CFL athletes of all time, Damon Allen and Mike Pringle.

The baseball team has one the CWS in each of the last 4 decades including most recently beating Texas. They also beat USC in 1995 led by Mark Kotsay.

However, the school is probably most famous for Jim Rome rippping it on his show and for a stripper running on the Track team. What would Prefontaine think of that?

I'll see you and the Ducks on TV in San Diego or El Paso for the holidays dude!

whoops "won the CWS"

Can't give you a freebie, Mallard

Good deal and good luck. It's been fun bantering but I gotta go now.

And by the way GO DUCKS!!!
