USC-Notre Dame Report Card
Here's the grades.
RESULT: NO. 13 USC 38, NOTRE DAME 0.
RECORD: 6-1.
WEEK 7 GPA: C+.
QUARTERBACK
Mark Sanchez received a safe game plan with plenty of accurate throws but let’s not forget just how bad that secondary was before making pronouncements on the quarterback position the rest of the season.
B
RUNNING BACKS
At some point, like this week, it would be nice if Stafon Johnson started a game. Joe McKnight produced another feast or famine performance: a 51-yard run along with six other carries for 14 yards.
C-
WIDE RECEIVERS
Vidal Hazelton’s pinball impression on his touchdown catch will probably be a season highlight and Fred Davis made an NFL worthy touchdown reception but what about those drops?
C+
OFFENSIVE LINE
The makeshift line survived perhaps its last encounter with Sam Baker and Chilo Rachal expected back this week. They did OK under the circumstances, particularly freshman tackle Butch Lewis. ``He’s going to be an All-American,’’ offensive guard Jeff Byers said.
C-
DEFENSIVE LINE
Sedrick Ellis was everywhere again but reserve defensive end Alex Morrow had two sacks. Fili Moala also played admirably with a bone bruise in his foot.
B+
LINEBACKERS
Rey Maualuga sacked Evan Sharpley twice despite injuring his hip the week before. And Brian Cushing finally lasted a game without getting hurt.
B-
DEFENSIVE BACKS
It’s easy to defend slow receivers when the quarterbacks running for his life on most pass plays.
C+
SPECIAL TEAMS
A blocked punt, a fumbled punt return by Joe McKnight. There’s plenty to work on. Clay Matthews offset it by blocking an Irish field goal.
C-
COACHING
All it takes is Charlie Weis for Pete Carroll to regain his swagger. Or maybe Notre Dame is so bad, anyone could coach the Trojans and rout the Irish. Now come the real games.
C+

Comments
Scott, you are a hard grader. A 38-0 win results in only a C+? Four TDs and no picks results in only a B for the QB?
I agree that Stefan Johnson needs start and get the bulk of the carries. Chauncey often seems like he is practicing for "Dancing with the Stars:" hit the damn hole and quit dancing.
All in all, a wonderful win for the program. After watching us not beat ND for 13 years, it is nice to see the tables turned. Six in a row!
Fight On!!

For the most part, I agree with Scott's grades. The offensive line and DB's will dictate how well this team will fair. When the O-Line was pummeling people everyone looked good. The DB's need to start making more plays. Nice win for the team and onto Eugene.

Scott, I agree with uscmike, you are being a bit hard. Sure ND is bad, but a C+ for 38-0 win? What would have it required to get a significantly better grade?
B- for the backers? What would it take for them get an "A"?
C- for running backs? Both Washington and Johnson averaged more than 5 yards per carry, Havili had some good carries. To my recollection, neither one of those guys fumbled. C-??

Quarter Backs: Scott I thought this thread was entitled “USC-Notre Dame Report Card”. So when you say “let’s not forget just how bad that secondary was before making pronouncements on the quarterback position the rest of the season” and then give the Quarter Backs a “B”, that really does not reflect how Sanchez actually performed (4 TDs, 0 INTs) . When you take a test and receive an A-, the professor does not come back later and say...well I don’t really expect you to do that well the rest of the year and it was an easy test so I am going to give you a B...at least not when I went to USC.
Running Backs: Scott you are dead on...please start Johnson...throw McNight in there...and then use Washington in there to mix in a fresh set of legs (it is evident to almost everyone that Washington is a terrible starting running back...but a very solid back-up).
Receivers: Definitely getting better...keep going to Vidal...and keep using the tight end!

last time I checked, stanley havili and bradford are running backs. Their td grabs should boost that grade a bit. At least to a solid B. McKnight's short runs were good decisions, he went down instead of trying to fight for extra yards and fumbling.
These grades are in keeping with your grading scale from years past; however, I still see this team as much better than any team that Hackett coached and you give them the same grades...
Sanchez played a B+ game, he controlled the tempo of the offense and he protected the ball.
The receivers ran good routes and John Walker continually impresses me with his downfield blocking.

Geez, Scott. Your poor grades reflect more on you than either team.

More "acting out" than serious grading, I think. C+ for coaching? Please. After all, they led a semi-lousy Trojan team (that's the characterization you've been pushing, right?) ... anyway, a semi-lousy team to the worst defeat of the Irish at home in 40-some years. Instead, if USC had been any good, would a 38-0 coaching effort receive an F?

So, you give the running backs a C- grade because Stafon didn't start after being out 3 weeks with an injured foot? The running game garnered 227 yards on 36 carries... 6.3 yards per carry... that is extremely good unless you don't understand the game of football...btw, ND was stacking the box during most of these running plays. Five backs had at least one carry over 10 yards... I guess that isn't any good either. What about Bradford's great catch on a ball thrown behind him... he's a RB, I guess he doesn't count because he didn't start either...
You better start watching the game before you grade the next one Scott.
Your analysis grades out to a D-!

When Stafon Johnson is 100% Chauncey should take a seat on the bench. Johnson and McKnight remind me of LenDale and Reggie.
