About The Defense

This clearly was a stellar performance by the defense, but before thinking those nine sacks can be replicated every week, remember that Oregon State relied on a five-step drop for its quarterback and stayed in the pocket. And that's why Pete Carroll went to man-to-man coverage, which we alluded to previously.
But at least it allowed Everson Griffen to emerge with 3.5 sacks.
``It’s a big relief for me,’’ Griffen said. ``I just showed everybody what I can do and what we can do. There’s a little of a release off my shoulders.’’

Defense was dazzling, as was Everson Griffen. Bravo!

don't get too excited...without any running game and a QB that throws mostly long passes which take time to develop, the pass rush was pretty easy.

let's see how they do it against ASU and Cal even though neither of those teams are really in top form now.

EG is too talented and he will deliver hype or not. He showed his trength and speed around those OLmen...

OOPS:
Somehow I skipped the "s" on the word strength when I was referring to EG's strength.
Thanks

A good ol' Trojan that does a show on Sirius NFL Radio, Tim "Rock" Ryan, often discusses the theory of Presure/Pick, Coverage/Sack - SC's defense finally demonstrated this concept. Additional pressure is going to cause bad throws and/or create the ability for DB's to jump the route on forced throws, and good coverage in the secondary creates sack opportunities. We have felt this on our QB's on the other side of the ball, and while everyone has been quick to judge our QB's - it all comes back to winning the battle up frint on both sides of the ball!!!!

Tim Ryan is right! There is an absolute ebb and flow between the pressure created by pass rush and the subsequent bad throw/bad choice/bad read made by the quarterback.
Against Cal it could be different in that Tedford runs a comp route into the whole that her perceives has been left open by his formation or what the defense likes to do (blitz/stunt/read). AND they run a lot of three step stuff. We will run more of a run blitz package to counter that with zone behind it. PC is feeling good about his man though. Man under 2 deep is popular against a team like Cal because they favor Jackson but that #7 kid can go and get it. The weak side safety has to sit in the alley and wait to collision that route. We will also see a little more Kyle Moore in this game when we go to zone blitzing and need him to match up with TE/HB.
