About Those High Passes

Quarterback John David Booty attributed some high passes against Oregon State to rust after he broke his finger.
``I’ve been out three games. Usually, when you first come back to camp or spring ball, they aren’t perfect,’’ Booty said. ``A couple of throws were high on me.’’
He also overthrew freshman wide receiver Ronald Johnson on a deep pass.
What's interesting is Carroll praised freshman wide receiver Ronald Johnson on the play.
``We just missed him,’’ Carroll said. ``(Johnson is) doing his part.’’

OMG!!! An overthrow on a deep pass! Where the f*ck has the coaching staff been the last 2 years? JDB has consistently overthrown the deep ball by 5 yards. Wolfie has reported it, our vertical game has suffered from it, and it has been damn obvious for 2 years. It has nothing to do with his fkn finger. Sorry, again, JDB is a great kid, but this has been a problem since inception. Why is the coaching staff just acknowledging it now??? Thanks, Scottie, for staying on this issue for 2 years. How in the hell can an obvious achilles heal go undiscovered, or not addressed, by the coaches for 2 years?!? Sanchez has a good touch on the deep ball, and I know Mustain does too.

How many deep TD passes have the Trojans even had this season?

Was it just the Rojo one?
Sometimes I wonder if Randy Moss would even help USC in the vertical passing game.

I realize that Booty had a great year last year, but this year he has regressed. Aside from the broken finger, he has played like a redshirt freshman at times. For some unknown reason the coaching staff still seems enamored with him. I wonder if that would be the case if Chow was still here. The fact of the matter is that Sanchez gives SC the best chance of winning these last three games. He brings more energy to the team, and the rest of the offense plays better for him.

Hey trojnfn72,
I would not say that it is "the fact of the matter." sounds more like your opinion to me. Though I like Sanchez, he certainly didn't help us beat Oregon.

Hey thelowdown,
I in fact WOULD say it's not only "the fact of the matter" but it's also clearly obvious. Liek the old saying

"If you keep doing the same thing, you'll end up with the same result."
JDB has not shown an ability to do anything different, he sucks, he cost us a chance at 2 NC's (ok, I know HE didn't, but he could've altered the course), he will never make it in the NFL.

It's time to give Sanchez a start. Has anyone seen next year's schedule? Brutal!

OK none of those are my posts

:)

There is nothing we can do now but wait it out for MM

Recall the vast improvement of Sanchez from game 1 to game 2. I bet Booty will evolve the same way. And the kid can convert a long pass a la Oregon State and Michigan last year. If only he would put a little air under it at times instead of rocketing it. Oh well.

Nice restraint for you 66! But the only thing we can do now is 3 straight W's with steady improvement in the Offense to set up a crushing victory in the Rose Bowl!
Now that Booty is healthy, has the rust off he should start vs Cal. But two games in a row like the last one and let MM (The Mighty Mex)get his chance to win out and set up for next year.
Fight ON! SC 32 -14

Yeah Cal looks like crap...even PP was making fun of them on TV last week...ASU didn't impress me much either..

trjnfn72 stated "He brings more energy to the team, and the rest of the offense plays better for him." And please tell me how the offense plays better for him. Are the running backs running harder? NO Are the lineman blocking harder? NO Is the defense playing better? YES - IN THE GAME BOOTY STARTED! Just give the Sanchez thing a rest. I think he has started the only three games he will ever start in his career barring injury to MM.

Who cares if he brings energy? We can't laud Carson Palmer for being calm and then rip Booty for being calm. You have to be consistent. As for Sanchez' energy, he showed a lot of it chasing the Harper kid on Oregon all day!

As for Sanchez' great improvement from game 1-2. HE PLAYED FREAKING NOTRE DAME IN GAME #2.I think anyone on this board, Redcorn included, could have thrown 4 TD's against ND! Those two picks against Oregon were God-awful!

One thing JDB might try to protect his middle finger from rusting is to spray it with Rustoleum, available in many nice colors from Home Depot. Ideally, he should remove any obvious rust with a steel brush, then clean and dry it. Apply Rustoleum by holding the can about 18 inches away and spraying 3 light coats, allowing 20 minutes of drying time after each coat. Taping the adjacent fingers with 3M Blue tape will protect them from overspray. A nice lemon yellow color would emphasize his passion for the game should he decide to visually remind blog commentators that he is the #1 QB after running up 400 yards and 50 points in Cal's house this weekend.

We all know you don't like Sanchez PH, it's understood. For some reason, Sanchez isn't your cup of tea - and that's alright. But to continue to harp on the INTs at Oregon is just beating a dead horse. The first INT? Yes, it was awful, but the second? With 20-something seconds left on the clock from the 35 yard line after Pete had wasted at least 25 second making up his mind about the 4th and one? Sometimes you've just got to put it in there and hope. Would you have preferred that Sanchez just pull the thing down and run like Kevin Riley did to ruin Cal's chances against Oregon St.? With that distance and time left on the clock, he had to try to MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN. It didn't work out. Now you have to get over it.
As far as praising Carson for being calm and then ripping JDB for being calm... apples and oranges. First of all, Carson played a heck of lot better than JDB, so his demeanor was under less of a microscope. But I remember Carson getting after his players a little bit and trying to light a fire under their behinds. It just seems like JDB plays the game to get it over with; not because he loves playing. That's what everybody likes about Sanchez. When you watch Mark out there, you get the feeling that he would be playing in the park with his buddies if he wasn't on scholarship. He loves to play, he brings intensity to the game, and yes, he gets his teammates fired up and raises their level of play. For all the poise under pressure that Matt Leinart showed, he had that same kind of fire and passion that rubbed off on teammates and didn't allow apathy. That's what JDB lacks and Sanchez possesses in spades.

somebody call the whaaaambulance for JD.... his pinky has a booboo and the mean old fans are laughing at him.

how absolutely pathetic on his part. hasn't he heard of "practicing"?

the only way he'll get a j*b in the NFL is standing on the sidelines tossing in new balls to the zebras, and he'll likely miss them too, more often than not.

Yes I would have preferred he pull it down and run because THEN WE WOULD STILL HAVE THE BALL. Or he could have thrown it to the two open receivers since the one he threw to was TRIPLE COVERED!!!

If you tell me not to beat a dead horse, then don't bring up the Stanford game. At least in that game Booty was hurt, unlike Sanchez against Oregon who just tried to do too much.

Hey thelowedown and PH,

The fact of the matter is at QB Sanchez gave us the best chance to win against Oregon. Its too bad the coaching staff couldn't take the pressure off of him by getting our now nonexistent running game going. Come on only 3 carries for Stafon. An 85-90% healthy Stafon is still a deadly weapon. Too bad he was not used more. I believe Booty, with his infamous immobility and unhealthy right hand would have thrown at least 2 more picks than Sanchez did. Say what you want you know its true because Oregon's D showed up to play and their CBs played well.
Nobody talks about this but Booty had to fill some tremendous shoes and the pressure got to him. People said the same about Leinart after Palmer but he proved everyone wrong going 37-2 in 3 years. In the clutch Leinart prevailed and Booty has failed. Oregon St. and FUCLA last season were clutch games and so was Stanford this year.
Now I know your going to say "well Leinart had Bush, Lendale, D. Byrd, M. Williams, Steve Smith and Jarrett." True, but the talent level has not dropped far. There are some great players on SCs team but their full potential has not come out. WHY? Because more importantly there has been a coaching dropoff at SC. Losing Chow, Coach O, T. Davis and Kiffin was huge.
Pete Carroll is now realizing that he made a mistake against Stanford not sitting Booty down in the 2nd half and playing Sanchez. The problems in the last 2 years have been Coaching and a complete stiff at QB
Chew on that!

13-9 Fluke:

The fact of the matter is, Booty played great last season. No way was Oregon St. his fault - he threw for 400 yds and the pick in the endzone was DJ's fault since it hit him in the shoulder pad. If not for Booty we would have been blown out in that game with Chauncey's three fumbles.

UCLA we were hamstrung by unimaginative playcalling with no throws over the middle.

I'm tired of SC fans who don't realize other teams are actually playing to win games beside us. Anyway, enjoy watching Sanchez on the bench again next year!

PPPBBBBTTHHT!

I just spit diet coke all over my monitor from someone comparing carson palmer to JDB!

and 1966, those posts are FAR nicer than yours last week.

Evidently tiny spark has a tiny brain because I didn't compare JDB to the best qb in USC history. All I'm arguing is the that one qb's main point of critcism is another's point of praise, therefore a lack of consistency.

Bosco, thank you for the Rustoleum comment. I had a wonderful, deep, hearty 30 second chuckle on that one. I hate to rip JDB and wish him nothing but success, but the finger excuses have got to stop. Do even the JDB-ers believe that the fractured finger are a legitimate excuse for the intercepted screen pass that was returned for a TD against Stanford? You've got to be kidding me. Do they even remember that he also threw a pick returned for a TD against UW. And, did they even watch last year's UCLA game where a stauch pass rush made him look like a deer in the headlights? Think highly of JDB the person, but he doesn't have the QB X factor that great QBs have. It's been posted a million times on this site. He throws a great ball with good protection and NFL receivers, but put some pressure on him and he folds like a tortilla. Silver lining is that Sanchez showed that X factor and Mustain also showed it as a true frosh at Arkansas. I believe that our underachievement on offense will change for the better next year. We can't win it every year, and this experience shows us how incredibly complex it is to throw 50 19-21 year olds together to create a championship unit, regardless of their individual talents.
