Chow No. 2
Click here to see who was actually Pete Carroll's first choice as offensive coordinator at USC.
Although many USC fans yearn for the days when offensive coordinator Norm Chow called the plays, Trojans coach Pete Carroll said his original choice for the job was California coach Jeff Tedford.
Carroll said he contacted Tedford after getting hired at USC but was turned down.
``Then he went to Cal,’’ Carroll said.
He said he then turned to Chow, who stayed at USC for four seasons. The response came quickly from Tedford because Carroll called Chow the first day he was hired at USC.

Comments
The rumor was that Carroll and Chow were at-odds with each other; why else would Norm have left his beloved college ball? And so now Carroll is catching criticism for his coaching decisions, the bloggers actually contending he is usually being outcoached.
Reminds me of a line from John McKay when after getting beat by neophyte coach Tommy Prothro two times in a row, and then finally winning the third time: "I guess now people will stop saying I'm stupid."

Good to see you back TIREBITER 1; your posts always stand out and had not seen one lately.
That was an incredible piece by TROJANBOBCAT. It is at times rather bizarre, but it was fraught with factual football data.
And, yes, I would like to see that Chow article. Do I dare put my e-mail address on the blog, because there are some haters out there. Oh, well, I get 60 e-mails a day from solicitors so what the heck: wolcottlaw@aol.com
Thanks, TIREBITER1.

Correction-- I see the essay was credited to one Tom Osborne, but since trojanbobcat gave credit for the posting to ol '66' I was not sure if that was not an alias as well. Anyway, it was good stuff if anybody will take the time to read it.

My perception of an offense coordinator is a guy who is real good at card games. Part gambler, part nerd, seasoned with some years of wisdom. How do we turn this major position over to a guy that is still wet behind the ears (old cowboy saying) With all the millions SC makes on FB it does not compute that we don't have the world's best OC. I have to turn to the whole coaching staff. Yes a hard working bunch of guys but cut the bs, something is not working. Five star after five star and under achievement should not go hand in hand. The competition in practice is another world invention that only SC does.....result: too many injury's to key players. If I were a father with a kid that potentially could play on Sunday, do I want to risk that to some hair brain scheme that leaves him injured on the practice field week after week.

TIREBITER1-- got it; thanks!
I heard Plaschke on the radio last night, and he was talking about how some of our 5-star guys were overrated. Could be true. Evaluating talent is not a science, but an art...
And as as far as offensive coordinators go, Kiffen and Sark were considered head coach pro football material. It sounds as if they at least have the resumes. I don't know enough about football to judge their play selection, but SC did talk about being hamstrung with the inexperienced Sanchez the past 3 games, and how they are getting let it all out tomorrow with Booty. Hope they're right.

you misunderstood: what they said was that "Booty will let all the air out."
i don't think that he has what it takes to pull a Carson Palmer and suddenly discover how to play football part way through his senior year. CP suddenly clicked, but i don't think JD even has a switch to throw.
as for Kiffen & Sark, we see how well their teams are doing this year. 'nuff said.

In case you don’t understand what has been taking place behind the scenes of USC football, please take the time to read the blog:
http://behindthescenesatusc.blogspot.com
I’ve edited and edited the article to a point where I can’t delete any more information without destroying connecting facts that tie things together.
It will take you about an hour to read.
I apologize for its length. (It is divided by fall football seasons.) The length could have been avoided, if years ago, the L.A. newspapers would have printed my perspective, but they refused to print my perspective (or even an edited version). Therefore, problems stretched into another year, and so the article became longer than I would have liked.

Geez, trojanbobcat... Your fan fiction is actually kind of funny. I hope you got a B+ in your Creative Writing class at UCLA for it. The best part for those who couldn't wade through the whole thing:
"I even e-mailed assistant Coach Chow on Oct. 10, and asked him to create 'a play where the USC wide receivers are used as a decoy and then to block, to allow the quarterback to run with the ball.' (This play was later implemented in the 2004 Rose Bowl as 'Tripps Right…,' and resulted in a spectacular touchdown run by Matt Leinart.)"

Thanks for bringing up the "Tripps Right" play. I looked at the e-mail I sent Chow, and the date was actually Oct. 8, so I went in on the blog site and changed the date.
Thanks!

Having read the article, Trojanbobcat seems to take credit for USC's victories, and implies that USC's losses are some kind of rebellion for players not being able to speak out. It is paranoid and self-delusional, to say the least. What a bizzare "story."

What a complete pile of garbage fiction by Trojanbobcat. His account for why USC has either won or lost games (all credit for wins go to him, of course) makes Star Wars appear realistic!
As far as fiction goes, it's very poorly written and all over the place. Just complete drivel. Do you believe there are black helicopters monitoring your activities, too? Someone needs to take major doses of medication...or else Pete Carroll will relate his thoughts "through the media..."
Boo!

Hey Tirebiter1 & Lawyer John:
I'm surprised you found this "story" to be "fascinating" or "incredible."
The story may be "fascinating" or "incredible" in the same sense that it may be "fascinating" or "incredible" for some people to watch a train wreck.
He bared his soul to the masses. But it is nothing more than speculation, innuendo, and giant leaps to conclusion, as it relates to the USC football program. It reminds me of the character played by Russell Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind."
It is a diatribe, pure and simple.
"Diatribe," as defined by Marriam-Webster's Online Dictionary:
Main Entry: di·a·tribe
Pronunciation: dī-ə-trīb
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin diatriba, from Greek diatribē pastime
Date: 1581
1. archaic : a prolonged discourse
2: a bitter and abusive speech or writing
3: a story written by Martin Osborne

uscmike, Actually, it's a joke with a really, really long setup. The punchline? Your post above. Think about it.
Like "Falling Down" is the classic geographic tour of LA freeways and landmarks, this essay may end up being the classic history of USC football events from 1996 to present. Weird, huh? For completeness though, I hope he adds Matt Leinart's blog, Reggie Bush's fumble, Reggie's Mom's comments about him definitely turning pro, and LenDale's mysterious weight gain before the 2006 Rose Bowl. Bonus points to him for turning LenDale's love of Mom's cooking into metaphorical rape.

I have to admit that I started to read the Bobcat story, and had to stop after about 5 paragraphs. I'll read it on a rainy weekend afternoon when I have nothing else to do. Maybe it is good, but I had a strong feeling that it was mindless drivel after a few minutes.
Anyway, I don't know if this was public info already or not, but I find it fascinating that Tedford was PC's first choice. Maybe I am late to the game, but great reporting, Wolfie. What a small world. And, last I heard, Tedford was likely to leave Cal soon because of the decision not to build a new/overhaul the existing stadium. How much does he make? Surely, there are other schools that may throw some money at him, and with Cal's disappointing season and the stadium situation, does Tedford leave this year? Now, he was smart to hold out for Cal, as he has established himself as a star head coach, and thus, will likely never coach for USC. Anyone heard anything on Tedford leaving in the offseason? Interestingly, while I do pray that PC stays at USC until he is 65 or 70, one of my favorite future head coach prospects is this weak's opponent, Mike Riley. Move that to your useless opinion's folder.

Trojanbobcat is a complete wack job. I knew I recognized his name at the top of the blog. I was a swimmer at USC in the 90's and this guy was basically stalking my friend. The guy was locked up a few times, but he really needed professional help. He imagined a relationship where the was none. I would guess the rest of this crap is equal to that piece. 1 part actual events, 9 parts fantasy. The recipe for a crazy story.
