Quarterback Debate
I'm guessing if you favored Mark Sanchez in our QB poll this week, tonight's performance by John David Booty did not convince you.
``I was a little rusty. The ball got away from me a couple times,'' Booty said.

somebody call the whaaaambulance....
at least he demonstrated that he hasn't lost anything on his patented tuck & roll move under pressure, and the "but i was passing" histrionics after he was double sacked & fumbled was worthy of an Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama.

I'm not going to blame him. He's a young guy trying to live the dream right? While I don't think he is the best QB,or even that he should be starting objectively speaking, I'm sure you can't put this on him entirely. This is REALLY bad coaching. It also seems he has gotten appreciably slower and out of shape since being at USC. I know you can't trust some 40 times and his "best" came at a hometown camp not SC, but he came in at 4.5, 4.6 and now looks like a 5.3 40 guy at this point. And he is gun shy, hearing steps ten yards away. Who do you blame for that? I hope JDB makes it to the NFL to make up for what would have been good time with Sanchez (and Sark) developing.

It is NO big secret that I am Sánchez fan número UNO! These are my inferences:
1. By JDB's own admission the "ball got away from me". That tells me his finger is NOT completely healed and therefore he did NOT have a solid grip. To reinforce that point his passes were either high or short. He got helped by outstanding catches from Turner, Hazelton and McKnight. He could NOT control his throws.
2. PC stated that Mark was ready if needed. I guess he took advantage of that to be politically correct.
3. Back to JDB he did NOT look confident to me.
4. I would like to think that JDB is more talented than the 49ers Alex Smith. He got happy feet like Alex S. and to make matters worse he fumbled. Mark would have gotten at least a few yards avoiding the fumble and the sack resulting in a positive play; go figure.
I am staying with the subject. Please allow me to deviate a little. Did any of you watch the Alabama/LSU game? Discipline from both teams was the statement. Alabama's QB John parker Wilson is NOT more talented than JDB much less than MS. The point is the discipline and the execution displayed by that QB. Get ready for this. Alabama's offensive coordinator is Major Applewhite-yes former Texas QB(about 28 yo!). He must be a good or head coach Nick Saban would have NOT hired him. He'll be the next Jon Gruden of college FB. I am an ex-Marine so I know a little about discipline, thank you!

How about we lay off of Booty some, what about the drops again - Turner had 2, Freddie D, AUsberry, Havili all had 1 each - I counted 7 balls on the money that were flat out dropped - PERIOD. 18- 30 with 7 drops isnt all that bad. Our issues relate to execution and the receivers MUST catch the ball - Booty is under a microscope & criticism needs to be delivered elsewhere, if Havili catches it and goes to the house, and even the deep pass to Rojo was close (didnt see it on TV, but from my seat in the colisuem, it looked like Rojo could have at least tried to make a play if he laid out for the ball). Hope the juggs gun is out all next weeks firing balls at these guys. Also, we all can agree on how abhorrent the play calling continues to be

Glimmer of hope that I found unusual and refreshing is that Pete had Sanchez warming up midway thru the 4th. Sadly, OSU held onto their offensive possession for several minutes, so Sanchez only came in for 3 plays and made a gorgeous pass on one of them. Point here is that AT LEAST Pete may be willing to pull Booty and go to Sanchez in future games with the O struggling.

lower your expectations...we can't have great teams every year; PC is still the best and Sarkisian and the rest of the staff are doing a great job.

"Sanchez only came in for 3 plays and made a gorgeous pass on one of them. "
If I recall, that pass was a jump ball that was behind the receiver. I give all the credit to the receiver for making a great catch.

uscfd:
You either have selective memory or you are blind or prejudiced? Take your pick. The catches made by Hazelton, Turner and McKnight were spectacular and bailed JDB. Those throws were also high. Do yourself a favor and count JDB completed passes to Turner, Hazelton and McKnight in his six games VS Mark Sánchez completed passes to them as well in three games. WHY should we lay off JDB? The same folks relentlessly bashed Mark Sánchez everyday and only a few of us asked for that garbage to stop. Mark took it like a man. Now comes uscfd begging for JDB, WOW? The heat belongs in the kitchen and if JDB can NOT handle the USC hot kitchen then out of the kitchen is the solution...

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm more of a Sanchez fan and think he should start. That said, I still think I can offer objective criticism of the qb situation:
JDB didn't play all that bad, but he certainly wasn't the world beater that the Sanchez haters said he'd be. In fact, the two plays that impressed me most from JDB were plays that had negative net results. First, when he was leveled by the OSU lineman, he actually kept his feet. Normally, JDB falls down when the pass rush is anywhere near him, but in this case he kept his feet and continued to look down field. Unfortunately, when the next pass rusher came through, he fumbled. Oh well, I guess you can't have you cake and eat it too with this offense. The second play that impressed me was the perfectly thrown seam route that Havili dropped. He placed the ball right on Stanley's hands and he just flat dropped it. Unforgivable.
But that brings me to an interesting dilemma. When Sanchez came in to spell Booty for three games, the receivers suddenly developed hands. Now that Booty is back in, they have the dropsies again. Could it be that Sanchez throws a more "catchable" ball that's easier for receivers to haul in? We've all heard about certain quarterbacks throwing more catchable balls than others. Even though the pass may look exactly the same through our eyes, it could be possible that Sanchez just throws a better ball. Think about how many potential JDB interceptions opposing defensive backs have dropped. Maybe his ball is just hard to corral. The other explanation could just be that Sanchez played against inferior teams and that it was easier for the receivers to get open, or that the receivers concentrated harder knowing that the backup was in, but I'm not so sure.
My personal feeling is that Sanchez really does throw a more catchable ball and the receivers have an easier time catching it because it lands in their hands more softly, but I wouldn't bet my life savings on that hypothesis. I'm interested to hear other explanations and thoughts on why JDB has more drops from his receivers than Sanchez does.

Any pass that hits your man on both hands is by football definition a good pass. Vidal was well covered, but the pass was to a spot where only he could catch it, and it was a 30-yard frozen rope. He made a nice play on the ball, and his catch was a part of the beauty. But, it was not a highlight reel catch, and the pass was also part of the beauty. Better than JDB overthrowing by 5 yards every pass over 30 yards. Of which, there are always 2 or fewer pass attempts over 30 years per game.

Let me go on record as saying that Sanchez should be starting. But in JDB's defense he needs a cooridinator that is going to call a game that is going to really give him a shot to do ANYTHING. These plays being called have got my 75 year old mother cursing at the TV. That being said, I don't even think Sanchez gets the job next year. I see Mustain taking it early in spring ball.
