Rose Bowl or Pac-10 Champs?

| | Comments (17) |

It's not every year you can't have both, but that could be the choice facing USC.
The Trojans' only chance to be conference champion again rests on having Oregon lose at least once. But if Oregon only loses once, USC does not go to the Rose Bowl. And how likely is it that Oregon will lose twice? So, the most likely path to the Rose Bowl for USC involves both the Trojans and Ducks winning out (with the Ducks and Trojans probably needing Missouri to beat Kansas to reach their respective goals).

I'd prefer the Rose Bowl Game and watch the Ducks represent the Pac-10 in the NC Game.

It seems a little petty not to want them to go and win.

I prefer that Oregon lose 2 of the last 3 games (to Arizona and OSU, but not to UCLA), and USC wins out and takes its 6th straight PAC-10 title, thereby automatically clinching the Rose Bowl.

Then again, I hope all the teams ahead of us in the BCS lose the rest of their games to magically allow USC to play in the NC game. (Of course, Hell would have to freeze over first....)

But, I agree that I would not want for Oregon to lose only one game (or be jumped by Kansas), therefore causing USC to miss out on the Rose Bowl (even though we would be co-Pac-10 Champs). We then would be begging for an at-large berth to the Fiesta Bowl.

Let's just beat ASU and FUCLA, and go from there.

I agree with RAB. I'd like to see Oregon go to and win the National Title. Not only would it be good for the Pac-10, it'd be nice to see Oregon get some retribution for the snub in 2001. Remember, in 2001 (and witnessed again by SC in 2003) a Big XII team got shellacked in the Big XII Championship game and still went to the National Title game. Of course, each time the Big XII team went on to lose the Title game and justify the outcry against such travesty.

One point to make however. Oregon historically plays much worse at the end of the season than they do at the beginning and any kind of new injury to Dennis Dixon would be catastrophic to the Ducks. If they were to lose him in the second quarter of this game, for instance, the Ducks could possibly lose all three of their remaining games and close out their Pac-10 schedule with a 5-4 record. I don't think that will happen of course, but I wouldn't have any confidence in a Brady Leaf quarterbacked Ducks team.

Oregon was screwed in 2001, when Nebraska lost big to Colorado and then got killed by Miami in the Rose Bowl.

I am just not ready to concede the Pac-10 title to them yet. I will root for Arizona tonight. Although it was last year, Arizona waxed the Ducks in Autzen Stadium 37-10. Thus, Arizona won't be intimidated.

If Oregon does make the NC game, I will root for them over LSU or Oklahoma. But if it's Kansas, I may root for Cinderella. It's too early to say.

How funny (and sad) is it that USC is 8 points from the #1 BCS ranking and a spot in the NC game? And people treat USC like a joke now, a faded dynasty.

Ive also heard that Vir Tech's 41-9 loss to LSU is better than a lot of other teams' losses, even USC's loss to Stanford. How is this possible - USC's loss is a fluke, OTOH, VT's loss was proof that against top opposition, they can't hang. Nobody has really proven USC can't play against the best teams and win. I would argue the Oregon game was the opposite - against the #2 team in the country, USC (with a back-up QB in hostile territory) played down to the wire. Oregon played down to the wire against Cal and lost, but they seem to get more of a pass on it than USC gets.

Oh man. Sureshot jinxed us. Dixon is out and oregon is losing. NOO!!

uscmike99 Author Profile Page said:

Um, I told you so, kind of. Some wanted to just hand Oregon a shot at the NC game (and hence the Pac-10 title). They blew their shot. Too bad. Next.

Like I said, I'll take the front door to the Rose Bowl any time. Forget that at-large stuff. I want the Pac-10 title.

The Ducks look done. With tonight's loss, coupled with injuries to Dixon and Stewart, and Leaf about five plays away from joining them, their season could take a nosedive. Next week is the Wounded Ducks and the Battered bRuins. FUCLA could hand USC the Pac-10 title with a win over the Ducks, if USC wins out. But then again, it is FUCLA, so we can't count on it. It could come down to Oregon-OSU.

Let's devour ASU on turkey day, trounce the bRuins, and whoop the Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl, and become a top five team or better. Sound like a plan?

8 points from being undefeated only serves to prove just how poor our schedule was this year.

We haven't played up to our capability all year; the offense is still mediocre, and our defense is good but not great.

Looking at UO's defense tonight, just shows our shortcomings.

We could easily lose the next 2

Jinx? No. But I do feel a little like Nostradamus right about now.

Our boys can now claim what is rightfully ours and take our, what, 7th consecutive Pac-10 title?

Oregon must be feeling a little like Karl Malone, "The pebble have been snatched from my hand. It's time to go... like Kung Fu."

What is old is new again & The more things change, the more they stay the same. However you say it, USC: 2007 Pac-10 Champions has a nice ring to it.

Well, winning out and Oregon losing to either fucla or OSU and the title is ours and the Rose Bowl is assured!

Hey Surehot:

Yesterday, you were ready hand Oregon the NC game ("I agree with RAB. I'd like to see Oregon go to and win the National Title"), and today you are claiming the Pac-10 title should be rightfully ours (6th in a row if it happens). What a difference 24 hours make, eh?

Having said that, you sure did eerily call the potential for Dixon's injury and Oregon's subsequent demise. Got any good stock tips or favorite ponies? ;-)

Mike, I wasn't ready to hand the Ducks the title, but if it came down to a one loss Oregon team vs. a one loss Oklahoma (or Ohio State, Missouri, et al) I would have rooted for the Ducks to go. My best friend from high school went to Oregon and I used to go up to Eugene during Christmas breaks and hang out. I hear Duck fans are jerks but the student body (just walking around campus) as a whole is full of very nice people. Of course I would never even think of rooting for Oregon versus SC, but there are many times when I want them to do well. Last night however, I was rooting for Arizona and Willie Tuitama (from my hometown & PC's college city of Stockton) to do well.
Now that Oregon has lost and they have no shot at the NC game, I want them to lose at least once more so SC can win the outright Pac-10 title (one more "help out" game from Zona needed vs ASU). Make no mistake, even though I am a "Pac-10 guy" and root for all Pac-10 schools in non-conference and bowl games (never FUCLA though) I ALWAYS root for SC's best interests. So while Oregon winning out and possibly winning a National Championship would have been good for us, I rooted for them. Now, I will devote my rooting energy towards a Pac-10 title and a Rose Bowl birth.

One last point though. I wouldn't mind having us go to the Orange Bowl (not sure it's even possible with bowl tie-in's) so our boys can get used to the National Championship site for our 2008-2009 run. It worked for Texas in 2004 when they played in the Rose Bowl versus Michigan the year before they played USC and it worked for USC (albeit with a year in between) for the 2002 (season) Orange Bowl and the 2004 National Championship at the same site. I really think it makes a difference to have the team see the sites and play on the field to give them experience for the next year.

Hey Sureshot:

Wolf's post basically asked whether Trojan fans would route for Oregon to win or lose, and how it would effect USC. You and TrojanRAB initially posted that you wanted Oregon to win out and go to the NC game.

And, I have no doubt that you figured the chances of Oregon losing twice were slim, and thus why risk the worst-case scenario of Oregon losing once, but not twice. Like you, I too root for the Pac-10 in bowl games (except for FUCLA). It looks as if Dixon is out for the year, and, if so, they may lose again, because they look very ordinary with Leaf at QB.

Oregon VERY likely to lose at least one more game... Ducks coach announced Dixon out for season

SoCalMAB Author Profile Page said:

It was shocking to see how bad Oregon is without Dixon. Now folks, compare Cal's decline without Longshore at 100%, and Oregon without Dixon to USC without Booty, and the OTHER 18 1st and/or 2nd stringers. Guess we didn't look too bad after all, in fact we showed a depth they can only dream about. The Stanford debacle was a coaching mistake in the 2nd half, and the coach admitted it (finally - everyone else knew) I think we win out, and go to RB and retain Pac-10 championship. NC next year for sure.
