A Quick Note

Many of you are asking the circumstances over the departure of Norm Chow from USC. I'll have a post later this afternoon that will hopefully address this issue.

Heard Norm on the radio today. Was asked if he'd had a welcome back call from Pete. Surprise, surprise, no call yet. But hey, Norm's still optimistic...

I am as huge a Norm Chow fan as there is for what the man can do to develop QBs and as a stellar OC but...

Norm Chow is a traitor plain and simple.

There is no other logical reason from him to go from an OC position in the NFL to an OC position at a tier-B football school (and yes UCLA is no USC, Miami or OU so they're tier B) than that he sees it as an opportunity to piss Pete off. I hope PC stomps his traitorous, grudge-holding offense into the ground every year till his Titans stipend expires and UCLA can no longer afford him. This officially proves to me that the reason Norm left in the first place was largely his doing despite what Scott will likely post later. It's petty at best.

If he had a problem with Pete who is a defensive coach first and foremost what will his attitude be the first time he get's over-ruled on the field by Neuheisel - an offensive coach notorious for calling his own plays.

Oh and go away Miguelito. No one needs your fair weather nonsense around here. You talk trash all year last year then when UCLA loses you disappeared only to re-appear now.

I heard part of the Chow interview with PMS. He liked the opportunity of working near home, and fUCLA afforded it. Plus, he said that if you sit out one year, you don't want to miss out on what might happen that season. He talked about building relationships. It sounded like he wanted to stay connected. Being in LA accomplishes that.

He certainly isn't doing it for the money. He is already being paid $1M per year for two years by the Titans. I don't know what the bRuins are going to pay him, but assuming it is less, then he is technically working for free. I'm sure the Titans happy about the hire. (How about the GM who extended his contract, only to fire him?)

I really can't say he is a traitor. It happens in this rivalry. We have Ken Norton and had Henry Bibby. The bRuins have Walker and now Chow. I'm sure similar examples exist from the past, right Tirebiter?

Then there is Jeff Fisher -- the "Yoko Ono" of USC. He takes Chow away ... only to return him to the bRuins. Makes me wonder about that pass he tipped to Freeman McNeil way back when. ;-)

I don't like the Norton and Bibby comparisons...They were both players at UCLA that after their careers were over came back to the coaching ranks. Chow was an OC at USC 2 seasons ago and was responsible for a lot of the USC offense as it is today. Now he is in the exact same position across town. Not at all similar to a player that played decades ago...

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
