About Rankings

USC is an unimpressive 18th in the latest Scout.com rankings, but I've consistently said that team rankings are too subjective in recruiting. When USC was always No. 1, it was a dose of nice publicity, but that's not what makes the Trojans a perennial title contender.
Besides, I'm reminded of Billy Packer's recent quote. ``This may make all the recruiting experts angry but (O.J.) Mayo is a good player, he is not a great player . . . he could be a good player. He is not a great player.''
That was a criticism directed at the recruiting experts, not Mayo.

LOI is still a couple weeks ago, so Pete will have his chance to pull something big out of his hat.

Regardless, the rankings don't matter, no QB or RB's means this class will not be that highly ranked, as long as the needs are filled, and it seems like they are. Do we really need another RB?

SC is 18 because of the number of recruits not the talent. Based on talent they rank number 2 right behind Neuter Dame and just ahead of tOSU. As others have said, we are very strong in O line recruits and that's what we need this year.

I feel so embarrassed for anyone who entrusts the online recruiting services that prey on naive, overzealous fans. And I feel almost as badly for people who believe newspaper columnists when they pretend to be talent evaluators.

I am going against the grain here but I see Joe McKnight as sort of an OJ Mayo type of player. I may be wrong about McKnight but I just don't see a dominant college player. I see a good one.

John McKay once said that the biggest challenge in recruiting was projecting how a 17 year old would grow into a 20 year old, that there is a tremendous maturation process during those years. Alot of these 5 Star kids are dominating in High School because they have already matured faster than others, and have less upside. Probably the best example of this was Nebraska in the 1990's. Alot of tall lanky 225 pound country kids hit the weight room and filled out nicely into 280-305 dominating linemen.

After about my 5th Username and 5th e-mail Address,
I found a way past Scott's undecipherable Log In system. I've tried casually since Thanksgiving and actually got on. Now what?

Tom Lugenbill from Scouts, Inc. on the ESPN site actually has USC at #8:

#8 USC 16 verbal commitments, eight ESPN 150 prospects Needs met in the offensive line and at wide receiver as well as defensive line help, too. Must do its best to retain ATH Joe Adams (Little Rock, Ark./Central Arkansas Christian).

Lugenbill has Notre Dame at #7 and UCLA at #14.

It's funny that when USC is ranked #18 and stealing recruits from Fresno State and Washington State, star rankings don't matter.

Neuheisel has changed the game. Tarnished Heisman has created the uncertainty. Sanctions will end it all.

How was the Las Vegas Bowl?

Shouldn't you be explaining how UCLA got punked by USC at Pauley Pavilion in hoops last week?

We could talk all day about how Wooden used street recruiters to fill his title rosters. What's the point, they cheated fair and square and he was still a great coach.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
