Does it say something about the current recruiting class that USC fended off Fresno State (Malik Jackson) and Washington State (Brian Baucham) for its past two commitments? This isn't a slight toward any recruits, it's a question geared toward the only program in history to win at least 11 games for six straight seasons.

No it does not say much. USC passes on tons of 4 star and even some 5 star recruits every year. Carroll does not rate recruits the same way rivals does. I can name you numerous 4 star guys that Carroll has not offered over the years. If he wanted, he could have a class with no 2 or 3 stars at all. An example would be that he has offered guys like Jackson, Baucham, Curtis Mcneal, Pinkard, Terrell Thomas and Eric Wright and not offered guys like Robert Golden, Matt Scott Ryan Bass Tavares Pressley Milton Knox Kemonte Bateman Jerry Johnson Marvin Jones Antwon Moutra Christopher Owusu Aubrey Quarles Nelson Rosario Jarrett Sparks Corey Surrency Ryan Deehan Joseph Fauria Nathan D'Cunha Tyler Rigsbee Allen Carroll Max Tuioti- Malik Jackson. He could have gotten half of those guys if he wanted to. Half of these 4 stars werew not even recruited by USC. Carroll offers about 25 out of state guys a year and only gets about 5-7, but in state he owns recruiting. The botoom line is that he may not like a guy like Baucham or Jackson quite as much as TJ Bryant or Nick Perry, but he does like them more than a lot of 4 star local kids. PC does not really recuit any true 3 stars in his mind. I think he feels like Baucham and Jackosn are legitmate 4 stars and Bryant and Perry are 5 stars. Granted not every player that PC offers turns out to be a true 4 or 5 star level player. See Whitney Lewis(5 star) or Tiny Malu (2 star) A couple or years ago he said that Pinkard was the best defensive player on the team ansd he was a 3 star. He has his own rating system and I believe that he feels that all the players that he offers will eventially turn out to be great college players.

It's difficult to slam SC for going out and getting decent guys who aren't superstars because you never know what you'll get. Ryan Kalil and Lofa Tatupu weren't big names and they seem to be doing fine. Whitney Lewis is always going to be the best example of a "can't miss" missing. I'll be the first to say that it would have been incredible to get Arthur Brown, Patrick Johnson, Darrell Scott and maybe even Brandon Beal, but we're not too bad off when we have guys like Marc Tyler and Chris Galippo on the bench. Going off topic and repeating what SW says, Allen Bradford needs to go somewhere to get playing time. He's too talented to be thrown into the game for what I think are pity plays to make him think he's actually involved.

It says a lot. And if they're not doing well with the top high school recruits, why weren't some top JC prospects scouted and pursued? The D line is losing two top-notch seniors, one corner lost to graduation and two corners to attrition, O guard could be a problem - get some decent mature players in quick. If you're not getting flash, at least think strategically. What's going on here?

Get a life, Scott. We've averaged the top 2-3 recruiting classes in the nation for the last 5-6 years, and each class has had "fillers" ala Trey Henderson, Alfred Rowe, Travon Patterson, John Drake, Garrett Green, Christian Tupou, etc. This year is no different. Yet another example of you trying to stir the pot.

If you try harder to be controversial you might get that radio gig you've been dying to get. The one that Petro's so brilliantly throws in your face. BTW, SC didn't fend off either school. It was well known that if SC was to offer either player they'd accept. I'm disappointed in myself for responding to your posts, I know it's your real cool persona to piss off those who read the message boards, but I had too. SC never competed with those schools for those players.

I'm really confused, because, without USC you'd be nothing. Pushing buttons is fine, but do you realize by writing what you do you'll never write for anyone but the Daily?

Your welcome for making your day and responding in a negative manner to your idiotic updates. You'll have a full head of hair before you ever become relevant outside of Southern California, but cheers to you for getting under my skin.

I haven't started to make a habit out of doubting Pete Carroll and you shouldn't either. We have had the best program in the country for the last decade. I'm not going to question what he does one bit.

maybe Pete's tired of the ego of the 5 star recruit. They want to play a certain position, often opt to leave early and may be more difficult to teach.

the main thing is to address some needs...we all know what they are: CB, DL, maybe an OG . If he does that all is well.

I can't say I'm a rah rah Pete guy- but I'll hold off until LOI day

So is this why ESPN has us ALL the way DOWN at number five right now in recruiting. Doesn't sound so bad to me.

And of course the ratings publications are not dealing with science in determining the value of a certain player. It is an art, meaning that it is highly subjective. There are few sure-fire kids a la an O.J. Simpson out of J.C., or Reggie Bush.

So if a school ends up in the Top-10 it could easily have the No. 1 recruiting class in the country.
