Carroll Vs. Chow, Epilogue

| | Comments (7) |

I've sensed a huge amount of interest this week in the Norm Chow-Pete Carroll falling out judging from my email, so I wanted to add a footnote to the sequence of events.
This was probably the most difficult story I've written at USC because of the subject matter and who it involved, and the fact no one really wanted to talk about it in the open.
But once the story came out, both sides read it, and neither disputed anything. In fact, about a year ago, a former USC football player told me that Chow said it was the only story that accurately portrayed what took place before his departure. I only add this to emphasize Carroll and Chow's reaction to the story.

Scott,
Your report was very informative, but no one should forget that it was a foregone conclusion that Norm Chow was leaving for a much deserved head coaching position. He was the leading candidate for the Stanford job and was mentioned prominently for several others. No one imagined that Norm would be so uninspiring that he would someday end up as the OC at a second tier football program. That fact that Chow received no offers from other NFL teams after he was fired by the Tiatns says a lot; even the much maligned Karl Dorrell was able to hook up.

Aeneas is right, and isn't it interesting that the most significant recruiting news since the arrival at wastewood of Certified Quarterback Coaching Genius Norm Chow is that the reigning Parade magazine player of the year and top QB recruit for 09 solidifies his commitment to USC?

what about the allegation that NC approached Mark about him transferring to Stanford if NC got the job?

And what did PC mean when he allegedly said , "I will never hire a coach like Norm Chow again in my career?"

If we look at this scenario from another perspective it seems inevitable that we end up in a worse situation. Every off season Norm was interviewing for HC positions, but let's say Pete sticks his head in the sand and says "Norm and I are the dream team baby. He's not going to leave and we're going to rip it every year."

And then Norm does eventually leave, either to be a HC or to the NFL and SC has no one ready to step in and be the next OC. The Top 5 streak, the 11-win streak, the BCS appearance streak all come to an end and we get to read blog entries from Scott for years after about how Carroll mismanaged the situation and his sycophant commenters chime in with "Hear, Hear."

Consider where we were before Pete and consider what we've done since Norm left and be thankful every day that Pete Carroll is our head football coach. So many people, Scott ibcluded, like to intimate they would do it better.
