Chow Time

Discuss Norm Chow's move to UCLA here if you wish. Whenever Chow speaks to the media, expect there to be questions about USC and answers that bear no grudge toward Pete Carroll. His departure was so acrimonious, however, the truth is a different story.

Norm Chow to UCLA. My comment?

Yawn-n-n-n.

Wake me when the gutless little bruinies win something other than a Marie Callendar's Outback Winchester Cathedral Bowl or something to that effect.

You can have Vince Lombardi as coach, and it won't matter if you don't have the players.

Scott, tell us, who is more to blame for Norm leaving SC? Pete or Norm? What happened?

Hi Scott, how were they able to afford him? Enjoy reading your blog daily by the way.

You know, it's just too bad. PC/Norm Chow was such an unbeatable combo, but egos had to get in the way. Who knows, we might have been looking at a 6th consecutive national title number 6 next year if the system had stayed in place. Really though, despite the undeniable success, there just was not enough commendation to satisfy everybody's ego (there was plenty of commendation, but plenty of people taking credit). We kept PC, and while he has not been complete without the offensive mastermind, he is the most integral piece of our team. He is God in our religion.

I guarantee that UCLA's offense gets a gigantic boost from the hire, and I think that we real USC fans owe Chow a debt of gratitude. We ought to wish him the best of luck over in Westwood.

Finally, to 13-9 and everybody else clinging to the aberrational game of the century, I need only say 72-63 (at Pauley). Fortunately for the UCLA fans, I do not think any of us are pathetic enough to make the username and go over to the UCLA blogs to post comments.

shocked...it seems like a step down for him. Revenge has to be the motive, but I don't think he'll get it. And, I wonder if he and the Slickster will step on each other's toes.

We need some good news- we're in a rut. The season was a letdown; lousy Bowl game; 14 recruits; now this news about Chow.

maybe we should all focus on Trojan basketball this year

Scott-

I realize that Norm definitely is a huge hire for UCLA just basing it on name alone, which should play a significant part in their process, but the question remains, exactly how good is Norm Chow. His lone year using his plays after a lifetime at BYU we go 6-6. Coach Carroll then installs his own playbook and the rest is history. Granted, Chow was able to call plays incorporating 3 heisman winners, so how good is he really?

Maybe we can send fucla some our used jock straps as well. They want our retreads, I say 'terrific.'

Top 5 reasons Norm took the UCLA job:

5. Neuheisel was able to give him a bonus from his weekend winnings from betting on the Giants.

4. Powder blue is the official color of "washed up".

3. He can always blame lack of sucess on the quality of the players, alumni, other coaches, etc.

2. Neuheisel gave him even a better car than he gives his new recruits

1. Expectations in UGLYville are low. Winning the Vegas, Emerald Nut, or Sun
Bowl would be considered a successful season. After all, they can't even beat us in their sport these days.

Although Neuheisal has assembled a top-flight staff, the question remains as to how long Walker and Chow will stay. Both wanted to be head coaches (at fUCLA no less). Those ambitions don't die over night. I would be surprised if both are around after two years (and perhaps one and done). Still, talent wins championships. It will be interesting to see what Chow can do with Ben Olsen.

USCmike has a point. As does SAEtrojan. I don't think you can credit one piece of the pie with USC's success. It is clearly combination of ingredients. Remember in addition to Chow, Carroll, Ogeron, and Kiffin there was, and is, Steve Sarkisian, who worked with Chow as a player, and knows his system (and how to implement it) and apparently continues to succeed, and improve. This list also has to include Palmer, Leinart, Bush, White, Williams, Jarret, Colbert, Udeze, Fargas, and on, and on and on, all of whom are or were, in the NFL, and recognized as stars at their positions. Show me where on the FUCLA roster there sits such a pool of talent both on the coaching staff and the player pool, and then one can speculate about FUCLA future success. If USC needed any more motivation for next year, we just got it. Fight on all the way to Miami!!

Scott - I wish you would tell us the real story of the Chow/Carroll dispute instead of alluding to it. Their coaching combo was amazing (2002 - 2004). How did our stellar coaching assistants (Walker, Chow) end up at UCLA (aside from the fact that getting the Titans to subsidize Chow's coaching salary was genius)? Jeff Fisher needs to be taken behind the woodshed.

What UCLA may get out of hiring coach Chow is an above average recruit at quarterback that wants to learn his skills from coach Chow. But beyond that, there won't be too much to get worked up over. Remember, this is UCLA football we are talking about.

Fight On!

P.S. 72 - 63 Just like football!!!

In all honesty, it stinks that Chow took the fucla job. No matter how bad his falling out with Carroll was, USC put him on the map. He was a 'well kept secret' at BYU and North Carolina. SC made him, and he owes some loyalty. Of course, he's going to the right place for someone with no integrity. He's going to work for a weasel man who has no scruples; if fucla beats SC even once, Chow will be declared the new wizard of westwood, and if Slick Rick puts over a good three-team parlay, he'll leave and Chow can finally be a head coach.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
