There were several reports that Raiders coach Lane Kiffin wanted to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan before the club issued a statement last week saying Ryan would return. This is rich on a few levels, with the idea of a 32-year-old first-year coach firing a respected assistant.
But we mention it for another reason. The rumor among league coaches was that Kiffin was interested in hiring USC defensive coordinator Nick Holt as Ryan's replacement.

So what if he's 32 or 62. Shouldn't a head coach hire and fire assistants of their choosing. I understand that control in the NFL is very, very top down, but still. The Raiders are the crappiest franchise in the NFL. No wonder no one wanted to coach them.
