Orgeron Obsession

Many of you ask about the status of former USC defensive line coach Ed Orgeron. He is currently being considered for the defensive coordinator's position at LSU.

That would really suck. I know Pete likes Holt, but Orgeron was a great D-coord and a better recruiter. Hire him as an assistant head coach. I hate LSU more than any team since their fans are so obnoxious. They are still upset that SC won the AP in 03 and are such SEC homers. SC had alot more to be upset with by being left out of the BCS even though they were #1 in all the human polls.

How ironic. I remember when Ed was the head coach at Ol'Miss, the LSU posters were all over Ed as a wife beater and other unfair characterizations.

He's a heck of a coach and I hope he lands on his feet. Of course I would prefer that he go almost anywhere but Loser State.

Trojanaz: Ed Orgeron was never our defensive coordinator. He was the D-line coach. Those defenses you were so impressed with were Nick Holt's except for two years when he coached at Idaho. Prior to Holt coming on board, Pete was his own defensive coordinator. Not sure who was the defensive coordinator for the two years Nick was at Idaho. Maybe somebody has a timeline and can tell us who was the d-coordinator while Holt was at Idaho.

Pete was the DC from when he started coaching at USC until Holt replaced him as DC starting in 2006. Carroll's last game as DC was the Texas loss. If you will recall, the defense was not so dominant that year (gave up a ton of points to Fresno St and Texas). I agree that we should bring Orgeron on board. However, there is a sentiment that "you can't go home again" because it would be viewed as a step back in your career, or maybe an admission of failure.

Jon Tenuta who was DC at GT is also a serious candidate to replace Bob Pellini at LSU.

Ed O was great to SC. As much as I'd like to see him back, there's no way Carroll could demote or can Nick Holt. However, I don't see him getting hired at LSU. There's too much animosity there. He was such a great recruiter that Joe McKnight narrowed his choices down to USC, LSU, and Ole Miss. However, after he informed Ed that he was not going to play for the Rebels, Ed told him to go to USC because they run a pro-style offense and it would get him more exposure for the NFL if he wanted to be a running back. Of course, Ed didn't want to see McKnight playing against him every year but he also loved his time at SC and respected Pete Carroll. The LSU fans and probably Les Miles remember Ed O steering Joe McKnight away. I know he's from that state but Ed aint going there.

Can you back your serious claim with any documentation?

Capitan,

Bruce Feldman of ESPN wrote a book called "Meat Market," where he followed Ed O and his Ole Miss coaching staff around signing day 2006 much like Michael Lewis followed Billy Beane for his book, "Moneyball." In it, Feldman talks about how LSU fans were sure as hell that Joe McKnight was going to LSU. Ole Miss had been recruiting McKnight since he was in the 8th grade and Ed O saw McKnight as a two-way threat. USC wanted McKnight initally to play cornerback but McKnight wanted to play tailback. Realizing that he was about to lose McKnight to LSU, his SEC rival, Ed O called Pete Carroll and got him to open his eyes up to McKnight's offensive potential. Ed O's intention was clear-- get Joe McKnight thinking about USC, only for him to discover how far L.A. was from home and then hopefully McKnight would settle on a remote location closer to home, like Ole Miss. As Feldman quotes Ed O in the book, "I wanna help Pete, but it doesn't hurt to get Joe away from LSU." LSU fans hold bitter feelings toward McKnight, Orgeron, Carroll, and USC in general. I think Feldman even writes a little bit about this in his ESPN blog but you have to subscribe to ESPN Insider.
