Scott, I think this may have been the year the practice of both wearing dark jerseys ended. Do you know Notre Dame-USC also played the game in the Coliseum the next year, too with the Trojans winning 28-20?
The Trojans won this 1955 game.(the first USC football game I ever attended), 42-20. By the way, that is Jon Arnett on defense for the Trojans. The ND receiver looks like it is #85, Lou Loncaric(with special thanks to the "The Game is On" book by Cameron Applegate)

And the 1956 team might have won the NC (AS IN 2007), but they lost to STANFORD (4W-6L), and OREGON (4-4-2). They ended up 8-2, and rated 18th. in the AP poll.

JUST A FEW COMMENTS

THAT 1956 USC TEAM WAS BADLY HURT BY SANCTIONS FROM THE NCAA---THE SENIORS COULD ONLY PLAY HALF OF THE SEASON--THAT STOPPED JON ARNETT FROM BEING A CONSENSUS ALL-AMERICAN-------UCLA WAS ALSO PENALIZED---THE 1956 IRISH TEAM ONLY WON 1 OR 2 GAMES, BUT PAUL HORNUNG WON THE HEISMAN ANYWAY

THE SC--ND GAME WAS PLAYED AT THE COLISEUM IN 1950 AND 1951 TOO, AS WELL AS 55-56----THE ONLY REASON GIVEN AT THE TIME WAS THAT THEY WERE CHANGING THE SCHEDULE AROUND [BOTH TIMES, 50-51 AND 55-56]
THE GAME WAS NEVER PLAYED TWICE IN A ROW AT SO. BEND

UCLA AND USC HAD BEEN CAUGHT PAYING THEIR FOOTBALL PLAYERS $25. PER MONTH FOR EXPENSES----UCLA WAS CAUGHT FIRST-----AND THEN J. MILLER LEAVY [OLD TIMERS MAY REMEMBER HIM] SAID WELL, USC IS DOING IT TOO. WHAT A TATTLE TALE!!

RE THE JERSEYS, ALL I CAN ADD IS THAT I THINK THE IRISH WORE THE SAME ONES IN 1962--I WAS AT THE GAME--WE WON, 24-0, BEAT THE BADGERS IN THE ROSE BOWL 42-37 [AFTER LEADING 42-14, AND THEN SUFFERING NUMEROUS INJURIES---BUT NOT TO TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM RON VANDERKELEN OR PAT RICHTER--THEY WERE AWESOME IN THE 4TH QUARTER]--AND WILLIE BROWN OF THE TROJANS REALLY SAVED US BY INTERCEPTING A PASS IN THE END ZONE WITH ABOUT 5 MINUTES LEFT TO PLAY--AND WE WON THE NATL CHAMPIONSHIP--OUR FIRST SINCE 1932---JOHN McKAY NEVER SAID A WORD ABOUT THE INJURIES UNTIL AROUND 15 YEARS LATER, SO AS NOT TO DETRACT FROM THE GREAT BADGER COMEBACK, BUT BEGINNING LATE IN THE 3RD QUARTER, WE LOST 4 DEFENSIVE LINEMEN, AND TWO OFFENSIVE LINEMEN--AND WE WERE RUSHING VANDERKELEN WITH OFFENSIVE LINEMEN--WE HAD 3 FIRST STRING TEAMS THAT YEAR--ONE FOR OFFENSE, ONE FOR DEFENSE, AND ONE DESIGNED TO GO BOTH WAYS--COLLEGE FOOTBALL IN THOSE YEARS WAS SLOWLY EVOLVING INTO THE TWO PLATOON SYSTEM---------ON THE FINAL PLAY OF THE ROSE BOWL, WE HAD THE BALL ON ABOUT OUR OWN 5 WITH ONLY ABOUT 5 SECONDS TO PLAY--AND IT WAS 4TH DOWN-----I WAS PRAYING FOR JOHN TO TAKE THE SAFETY AND END THE GAME--BUT THAT WASN'T JOHNS' STYLE---HE PUNTED!!!!!!!! WHAT IF IT HAD BEEN BLOCKED OR RUN BACK--OHMYGOSH--FORTUNATELY THE BALL WAS KICKED OUT TO MIDFIELD, AND THE BADGER WAS VIRTUALLY DROPPED IN HIS TRACKS, AS THEY HAD EVERYONE RUSHING THE PUNTER.

Follow up---George Tirebiter appears to be right. From the photographs, the last year both teams wore dark jerseys(at least for games played in the Coliseum)was 1962. I couldn't find any photos from the 1963 game in South Bend, but I know for sure both teams have not worn dark jerseys in any game from 1964 to present.
