Even USC coach Tim Floyd went with Davon Jefferson over O.J. Mayo as player of the game against UCLA.
``I would say the player of the game today was Jefferson,'' Floyd said.

It is pretty obvious to me that Davon is our most talented player. He looks to have big-time NBA potential. Taj is a shot-blocking machine, Hackett is the gritty, gutty, feisty leader, and OJ is solidly inconsistent, good but not great, consistently erratic, but a gamer nonetheless. Great win, Trojans. Great job Coach Floyd. This is definitely a rebuilding year, but this program continues to take steps toward an elite status.

I will not accept the premise that this is a rebuilding year. I was at the Kansas game (now No. 1) and the Jayhawks' fans were real worried at the end when we closed on them. And Memphis, now No. 2, was a winnable game as well. Yes, we faltered against Washington State, but Jefferson did not play. And now ucla has to be worred about coming to Galen to try to avoid an SC sweep.
Those are some of the top teams in the country. I only wish we had one more quality big man to back up Taj and Jefferson. But Mayo looked as if he were under better control yesterday, and Johnson is a true point guard. Lewis had some nice plays. Hackett is Mr. Reliable. Things are looking up.

I hope you are right, LJ. While we should continue to grow substantially as the season progresses, I think we are just way too young and thin on the bench to make a deep NCAA run. OJ is a great kid, a very good player, but not the 2nd coming of LeBron that he was hyped to be. I love watching the team, and I think they will battle hard to make the tourney. But, I think we are 1 or 2 players away from even thinking seriously about an elite 8 run or better. If only we still had Gabe, or Ryan, or even a healthy Kasey, I might feel differently. We have almost no bench whatsoever. But, fight on, boys! This team is damn fun to watch....good at times, great at times, bad at times, but always exciting.
