Recruiting Story

We hear cornerback-wide receiver Joe Adams told friends he did not sign with USC because he wanted to start as a freshman and did not think he could do it with the Trojans. Adams signed with Arkansas.

I thought it was because Pete interviewed with the Redskins for nine hours. Adams obviously is covering Pete's butt by saying that it was about playing time. I am sure Darrell Scott would have the same lame excuse.

Yes Darrell Scott chose Colorado because unlike Pete their coach has promised to be at Colorado for the next 4 years. It clearly had nothing to do with the 5 RBs ahead of him on the depth chart...

Is Pete the only coach in college football likely to leave for the NFL? If the concern of Pete leaving was the reason USC lost out on most recruits then teams like LSU and Florida would be facing the same issues.

Adams would not have started, Neither would Scott.

They both could have started at UCLA, but chose better schools for them.

Both liked USC and Coach Carroll and would have come if they didn't want to play early.

The changes at Arkansas had to Joe as well.

Adams didn't want to comPETE. We really want the TJ Bryants of the world...Ed Orgeron once said the kids 'SC wants sorts itself out through the process...guys who don't want to earn their spot sort themselves out by going elsewhere, they actually do 'SC a favor by not coming...that's why we have kids like the Brod Greens, the TJ Bryants, the Stafon Johnsons, Brice Butlers, etc. etc...guys who come in wanting to compete against the best and aren't afraid of competition.

seriously, players who don't sign because they are afraid they won't start should go elsewhere.

B.Green knew that USC already had C.Gable and E.Moody. He knew that standouts like J.Mcknight and M.Tyler are both going to USC. Did he go sign where he can easily win the starting job? No. He was man enough and confident enough to still go to USC to win out the job.

hopefully he still has that confidence. I really think that guy is gonna be a player.

totally agree with everyone on Joe Adams not wanting to compete. but when you think about, isn't it a sign if a guy already decides he can't ever start as a freshman? No matter how good a player is. you never want to leave yourself questioning ability and whether or not you could survive. The best always want to rise to the occasion. rated or not, if you go to ANY football school, as a prospect you should think as a starter, because confidence is almost everything.

Well Darrell Scott choosing Colorado may not have come down to playing time. Questions are now being raised about why Scott went to Colorado, rumors are swirling that his mother was offered a position at a Colorado bank in exchange for her son going to Colorado.

Scott going to Colorado was a no brainer as it is a good school with a good Coach in a good environment with his family there.

The question should be on UCLA as to why they could not meet up to his expectations and keep Darrel Scott in California.

USC wasn't really on his radar as they already have a stable full of quality backs and Scott knew that. But what kept the ruin's from keeping him local? Especially with the problems that had been a big part of Colorado's media coverage 2 years ago.

I read a blurb on Adams that said that not only did he want to start early, but he also really wanted to play WR on offense, and SC had told him that we would play him at CB on defense. We really didn't need another "athlete" on offense with McNeal AND DJS coming in, so this loss doesn't bother me at all. Although, I am concerned about the advice that Adams is getting because at 167 pounds, his best path to the NFL would likely be as a CB.

As for losing a player to playing time, I am more concerned about Telemacque making a big mistake going to Miami. He would not play as a freshman at SC, but the depth chart would have really opened up for him as a Soph. And, we really needed to restock with more DBs given the injury problems that we have historically had at that position. From my count, we lost 3 KEY prospect to Miami, who was our much bigger competitor in recruiting this year than Florida or LSU. I'm glad Randy Shannon is on the East Coast, and that UCLA wasn't smart enough to make a run at him. I don't know if he can coach yet, but he has some impressive recruiting skills. Will be interesting to see if he can cultivate and coach the tremendous talent that he landed this year.
