Secret to success
The USC bookstore offers a display near its entrance selling copies of, ``"The Inner Game of Tennis" by W. Timothy Gallwey. The book was originally printed in 1974 so why is it being hawked so aggressively?
Because Pete Carroll just wrote the foreword for a current printing, where he talks about the 2005 Orange Bowl game against Oklahoma and the importance of the mental edge in such a huge game.
So where was that ``inner game'' mental edge in the 2006 Rose Bowl against Texas?

Scott, sometimes you're witty, other times you're clever. Lately, you've just been a jerk. The football program with the most success, 6 straight BCS bowls, highest rankings, most Heisman Trophy winners, et al, over the last 6 seasons, and all you can bring up is a loss in the national title game by 3 points to Texas? And just so you'll know, Billy Packer isn't the only person out there with an opinion on OJ Mayo. He's just the only one who says Mayo isn't great, and apparently the only one you like to cite. Again, very jerky.

The "inner game" mental edge was on the Long Horn sideline. The only thing the Trojans had on their sideline was Reggie Bush during the most important play of the game. Oopps.
Vince Young > Inner Game of Tennis
The SC offense had the inner game mental edge vs Texas as it certainly did its job to win that game.
I guess this is a knock-off of the 'power of positive thinking' concept. I certainly believe in mental power, but it has its limitations i.e. all the mental power in the world was not going to get Daniel Hackett on the basketball floor Thursday night.
#5 Pitching the Ball to a Walk On > Inner Game Of Tennis
Maybe PC can be the father of a new religion based on this tome. He should recruit Mitch Mustain to spread the word and be the Top Gun of the movement.
Ttonic,
I completely agree, Reggie should have never pitched that ball regardless if the guy was a walk on or not. I think the outcome could have been different.
Scott,
It's funny how you bring up that particular game. How about the 2004 Cal game? Cal had the ball on our 9 yard line and we held them on four possessions. Maybe on the defensive side of the ball the inner game worked, huh Scott?
I do remember Carroll giving that book to a few players to read. From my understanding the book helped these individuals.
So, as LJ said, mental power does have its limitations.
I'm holding out for the LoJack autographed edition with a picture of a cat on the cover.
Good job Scott. I like reading all these information about by fomer school.
