They Like Me
Caesar went on the Petros-Money show today and was asked about NFL teams courting him.
`Honestly, it's an OK thing. It's a nice little feeling that the guys are interested in you. It's a nice thing that they're interested.
``This is going on Year Eight and I love being at USC . . . I'm not going anywhere. How close have I come? Not very. Really have never come very close to any opportunities at all that have been out there. Nothing's been able to turn me away from the Trojans.''
So how come it took nine hours to talk to the Redskins?

Well, I have said it before and I will say it again. The man is 56 years old in a profession that kills off 60 year old men. Can't blame him for sniffing out the opportunities out there.
But I believe the overriding factor in his remaining at SC, and finishing up his career as a Trojan, is his legacy. Would he win a Super Bowl? Highly unlikely. Heck, even Belichek found out how difficult that is this year with a superior team.
No, with Pete's extraordinary energy and drive, I believe he could go on until he is 65, another 9-years. And what kind of legacy will he leave during a 16-year career? He has 2 national championships under his belt. I think he can bring in 2 more during the next 9 years. Maybe 3. That would leave him as the KING of college football. Better than Bear Bryant, better than all the rest.
I hope Pete Carroll stays at USC as he is been great not only competing, but in teaching and inspiring tons of young people. (Even players at other schools admit USC would be their school of choice if there was room.)
He also helps in the community and is a tremendous asset in encouraging others to help as well.
Steve Young said his energy is so contagious that any young man would want to go there.
If Pro Football was so important I am sure they would play it in Los Angeles. Since it is not, Go Trojans! Fight on!
"So how come it took nine hours to talk to the Redskins?"
Gee Scott, Ask Pete and let us know what he says!
His comment of ``This is going on Year Eight and I love being at USC . . . I'm not going anywhere" The "I'm not going anywhere" part is going to instill in peoples minds and if PC keeps saying that, people are going to expect him to stay and will receive some backlash if he doesn't and would tarnish his legacy. That being said, you can't help but say that his infectious, high energy, fun attitude isn't suited for the NFL(aka the "No Fun League"). Look at the two coaches who were in the Super Bowl this year...Coughlin and Belicheck...both are known as tyrants and are not known as "players coaches" from the Bill Parcells tree...even though he's been out of the NFL for only 8 years, I think PC would have a hard time related to today's players at the next level.
"So how come it took nine hours to talk to the Redskins?" Really?!? You could not be trying any harder to stir the pot. It's pathetic and "journalism" of the lowest caliber.
Couldn't they have been talking about anything else in that time? I've interviewed for jobs I haven't taken before - nothing on the level of an NFL head coaching job - and had the interviews last 8+ hours and my job is nowhere as high paying or demanding as an NFL head coaching position.
My typical job interview for an upper-management position in big pharma has lasted 6-7 hours (and yes, I've gone on them and turned them down). I would hope the interview for a head coaching position would last a little longer considering the amount of money they are paying these guys. You go in, you meet with different people in the organization, pick their brains, talk about lots of different stuff (anywhere from hobbies to family to professional is up for discussion) maybe enjoy a nice 2 hr lunch where you talk some more.
There's nothing fishy about a 9 hour interview - unless you are suggesting that Pete should either tell Snyder to shove the interview where the sun don't shine or halfway through the interview get up and walk out while muttering something about Scott Wolf and the writers back home thinking this was fishy.
As far as I'm concerned Pete can interview with whomever he wants, as much as he wants. If he takes another job he takes another job. Nothing about Pete's approach to date suggests to me that he would be anything but forthcoming about really being interested in another position. So for he's said he's not interested and he hasn't taken another job - what more do you guys want from him? It wuold be foolish of him to not take interviews because as I've said before they keep him relevant in the eyes of recruits. If the NFL wants Pete still then he must be doing something right and recruits know that.
I don't think he would lie to incoming recruits about leaving, I don't thing he would leave in the middle of the night and leave USC in the lurch. He's worked too hard to leave his stamp on the program and define his legacy here. If he leaves it I think he's well aware of what the right way to do it would be.
I don't know what about his approach has suggested to you and other fans of USC that he would do otherwise. Pete Carroll is no Nick Saban or Bobby Petrino. He may have a huge ego (and most great leaders do) but he's not a complete idiot.
I agree with Trojan_Bob go ask Pete...
My "sources" told me...the meeting was held at the A-B Brewery in St. Louis. Why wouldn't you drag it out for nine hours? Most of the discussion was about the Pac-Ten adding two teams, changing it to the Twelve-Pac, with the conference championship game being the "Bud Bowl". Snyder must be a A-B stockholder.
