About that Wall Street Journal story

Here's some reaction from Tim Floyd today.
``So Romeo's getting some pub,'' Floyd said. ``Good. . . . People are talking 'SC basketball. It's a good thing.''
But Floyd bristled over the passage listed earlier today where the father of walk-on guard Ryan Wetherell's father said the coaching staff told him Romeo Miller got his scholarship because of his relationship with Demar DeRozan.
``Ryan Wetherell's never been promised a scholarship of any sort,'' Floyd said. ``I never met the kid until he got onto campus.''

Let's see...most programs offer jobs to HS coaches, or a player's family to get the recruit. We only had to offer a lesser-skilled, but still solid, player a slot to nab a superstar. Recruits become friends and frequently select schools together. You can never have too many fast PGs for practice. And, this lesser-skilled player is a celebrity who will bring tons of buzz and attention to the program. And, recruits are attracted to programs that are in the spotlight (see football team). And, all of the above will sell more tix for SC.

Brilliant, Coach Floyd, brilliant! You are playing the pieces of the LA pie like a chess master. Final four in 2010! Lil Romeo, the table is set for you to deliver a heaping dose of F U to a nation of critics. Good luck.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
