Q: Where does Mike Garret rank amongst other ADs? With football over the past couple years, the new Coliseum deal, Galen Center, etc, it seems like he's doing a good job, but I get the sense he doesn't get a lot of credit. Is the assumption that he got really lucky with Carroll and everything else followed after that, so its all just a matter of luck?
A: There's a lot of stuff an AD has to do but the public bases their opinion on the football and basketball hires. Of course no one knew how successful Pete Carroll would be, or he would not have been off a year after the Patriots fired him. And he was the fourth choice when USC hired him. He even admits it.
Being a good athletic director also includes balancing the budget, graduating athletes, protecting a school's interest within a conference and the BCS. Another barometer I would use is the morale within the dept.
When you say rank, I assume you mean within the Pac-10? I find that unfair to any AD at Washington State or Oregon State or schools that simply cannot hire the same type of coaches or raise the same amount of money. You could be a great AD at Washington State but you'll never get a Pete Carroll, unemployed or employed.
Q: Will Jordan Cameron be attending SC on a scholarship, or as a walk-on?
