Who's to say that he's not -- understandably -- taking meetings with NFL clubs as leverage to boost his salary at SC?

Who's to say that if Snyder and the 'Skins had offered Pete the 8 million, he wouldn't have found something else to quibble about? Thus justifying his staying at SC.

News flash. Pete Carroll is not stupid. He knows full well what he's doing at SC. Both in terms of its real-time *and* historical implications.

For $8 million a year, I'd give up just about anything you wanted. While I was REALLY skeptical of him when he was first hired, Pete's done what we all yearned for, and that is getting SC football back to national prominence. If Pete wanted to leave next year, I'd pat him on the back, thank him for everything, and pray that Garrett doesn't screw up the next hire.

When Pete leaves (everyone leaves someday) how many minutes after the announcement will Mike Garrett get a call from Slick Rick the Weasel of Westwood with his just dusted-off old USC gear. I say 15 minutes tops.

If and when he leaves, keep in mind he can always come back.
