Quite a question

Here's one on a vital topic.

Q: What do you attribute to the dramatic drop in the physical quality of the USC Song Girls these past eight or so years? They have, to put it diplomatically, become very homely, would you not agree? Some people attribute the drop in Song Girl standards to the university's increased academic profile but that is an extremely weak and flawed excuse. After all, was it not as recent as 2006 that the now-Mrs Ryan Kalil became world famous for cheering on Texas in the Rose Bowl? So clearly increased intelligence is not a legitimate excuse for why the Song Girls went downhill so fast and have been eclipsed by many other universities' cheer squads, with Oregon being the new gold standard.

A: I think it's time to question the makeup of the group that selects the song girls. It's been characterized the past few years as ``70's-era relics'' from some of the girls who went through the tryout process and now it's clear the public is upset about this. I suggest Pete Carroll become involved and the tryouts be shown on TrojanTV. Then you would get transparency. Do our readers know what to ask or what?

excellent topic. i've noticed the drop, too. can any current students weigh in on the current talent pool at SC that they have to choose from?

Calling a girl "homely" is "diplomatic?"-- No wonder society drives its women to neuroses regarding their physical appearances.

Bill Clinton will shortly have nothing to do, maybe he can head up the USC song girl selection committee.

The talent is there, I think more needs to be invested in scouting the student body...I would love to end my time at 'SC by spearheading this project.

Here's part of the problem: Unlike most universities (i.e., Oregon) USC 's Song Girls must have a backround in dance. They spend hours choreographing all of those moves to whatever 1973 song Bartner has them dancing to. So, if an outstanding & talented (read: good-looking) women trys out and doesn't have a dance backround she will not be selected. it doesn't explain everything but it is part of the problem.

That is a completely bogus argument for one simple reason - based on your own criteria, the Song Girls were still attractive in the 1990s, but are now extremely ugly. So the dance criteria has nothing to do with why the girls have become so ugly these past few years. The girls in the 1990s could dance AND they ranged from very pretty to beautiful. Now they're just hideous and that's not a matter of one's point of view - it's just obvious to anyone who has seen them.

So no dice.

I see your point. But you have to admit that by insisting upon adance background it does limit the avialable pool of talent.

first off, I never respond to stuff like this and I don't want to piss anyone off, but I have to say this.

for this to even come up and for people to discuss the attractiveness of the song girls is ridiculous. i know every one of those girls and not only are they great dancers but they are HOT!

these girls are great ambassadors of the school and they represent USC perfectly. Not only are they some of the most attractive girls at SC, but they are athletic and intelligent. For those of you who put these girls down, you are pathetic.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
