Simmons arrested
USC recruit Maurice Simmons was arrested Wednesday for robbery in Compton, after he allegedly pointed a handgun at a man and demanded his belongings.
Simmons, a linebacker from Dominguez High School in Compton, was held on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.
``Someone was robbed on the street and we were flagged down by the victim. We then confiscated a handgun and the victim's belongings (from Simmons),'' said Steve Whitmore, a Los Angeles Sheriff Dept. spokesperson.
A USC spokesperson said they are aware of the arrest.

Let's not convict the young man before he has due process. With all the crime happening over at UCLA these days, even the gutless little bruins should know that.

If any of the Daily News editorial staff hierarchy reads this blog, it's about time somebody took notice of how utterly ridiculous Wolfie's reporting has becoming. Maybe he needs to go back for a refresher course at USC? Or maybe he can call good ol' Joe Jares for some tips - Joe wouldn't know journalism from a whole in his rear end.
That's kind of ridiculous to blame after Wolf for posting information from the police, and information from the police. If you're going to get mad at somebody for something, maybe the guy to be mad at would be Simmons for holding somebody up at gunpoint. In the grand scheme of things, holding somebody up at gunpoint is probably worse than posting from the police. I'm pretty sure Wolf hasn't been arrested for posting this information, but Simmons has been for HOLDING SOMEBODY UP AT GUNPOINT.

KingOfLA, you have no idea what you are talking about here. Wolfie has always gone out of his way to rip Pete Carroll, USC, Mike Garrett, even poor Chad Kreuter, the new baseball coach. I guess nobody is perfect, except Wolfie ol' boy. Of course, if you want to post TRASHY stuff, then Wolfie better look out - we all know there is trash out there about him, and turnabout is always fair play.
Wolfie will never SPLASH a headline in his blog if Simmons is exonerated. That will only be a last-line note in some other story - Wolfie is NEVER wrong, you know.
Better clean up your act, Wolfie, because the day of reckoning is near.
If its true he was arrested, then SW is just reporting what happened. In my opinion, this is not a case where SW is trying to rip USC; although I agree that SW sports the occasional bad attitued.
If true, I hope he never makes it to SC. As an alum, I don't want to see that type of behavior rewarded. That said, the young man deserves a chance to explain himself.
Bad stuff happens in the big city, whether you are a nobody or a high-profile athlete.
But I bet that society at large has a higher percentage of convictions than a college football team.
If your underwear is in such a bunch about his journalistic style, then don't read the blog.
If this kid is guilty, USC won't take him. They summarily dismissed--or forced out, as was reported--others in the past.
Very uncool to diss Joe Jares. I remember the DN under him. Those were the good ol days...

RAb is right. I sure hope this issue doesn't have a trickle down effect and keep Marquis out of the cardinal and gold. He's supposed to be a better prospect than his brother. But, I had heard these kids were strong character kids in their community, so it would be wise to reserve judgment until this thing plays out.
Story posted almost verbatum in the Times. So just reporting the facts. Sounds pretty bad though. Car stopped, he was the driver, stolen items in the car (including a gun). Even if he didn't do it, he needs to clean up his act.
