More Booty
Q: Why is John David Booty so underrated and criticized? He is tough and doesn't complain, if he had Reggie Bush and Lendale White, he too would have a championship.
A: Any quarterback who followed Matt Leinart would be criticized unless they won a national championship. I believe Booty did receive more criticism than he deserved, especially because he played with a broken finger against Stanford. If Leinart had the same receivers, it would have been interesting to see how different his stats would be. It was an incredible advantage for any QB to have Reggie Bush and LenDale White (and Mike Williams).

All true, but come on, Leinart was the best of all time in the college game. He would have found a way to use what he had to win a championship. Booty was very good, but Leinart was Leinart.
I only had two criticisms of Booty. One - He wouldn't take a hit even if the game was on the line. (Not that I can blame him for not wanting to get hit by a 300lb DT.) Two - His passes were flat and had too much velocity. (He didn't have any touch on his passes especially on the long ball.) JMHO
that's a great post trojanfan...JDB is definately "a project" he is in love with his big arm and zings every pass at 110 mph and flat as a board..he was a big reason our WR's had a terrible year last year. One of the funniest posts I have ever read was some magazine article saying booty has better touch than sanchez..hell I have better touch that booty. And he also has 0% accuracy on long passes..he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn over 20 yards..
my opinion is...thanks and don't let the door hit ya on the ass on the way out JDB and bye!
Not that our WR are that great anyway, like scott said. I call them the three amigos after that movie with steve martin and martin short and chevy chase....about 3 guys who look great in movies but in reality are a bunch of idiots...thats ausberry turner and hazelton..couldn't catch a cold much less a pass and couldn't care less how much longer until the NFL combine?
RI - I couldn't agree with you more regarding Turner. He has been a HUGE disappointment. Ausberry remind me of Fred Davis without the soft hands. But, I think Hazelton will be better now that he has had his groin surgery (ouch!). That magazine article must have been hilarious because saying anyone has less "touch" with their passes than JDB is essentially calling them completely incompetent.

Booty is criticized because he just ain't that good. He can't throw long, he isn't mobile, his passes are easily batted down, and he doesn't see the field well.
Personally, I'd be surprised if Booty is even drafted. If anyone picks him on the first day, then it will be a wasted draft pick. I'm thinking at best Booty goes in the final round and makes a practice team. More likely he'll be cut.
What's interesting his how the receivers fare this year. If they begin to live up to their hype, will it be becasue they are a year older, or because Booty just wasn't that good.
TF:
I am also a huge Hazelton fan besides the QB: MS. The point is that VH had an abdominal surgery NOT groin.
Regarding JDB the reason his passes had that much velocity was to compensate for his lack of arm strength. He doesn't have a strong arm like Mark or Carlson Palmer.
and yet John David did not say one word when Leinart came back but since a lot of USC fans are spoiled and there hasn't been an NC since 2004...who better to blame than John David for everything that happened...nice usage of the Trojan Family...
John David was a good kid and did the best he could...but then again, John David did actually play football unlike most of the fans who criticized him...
Booty was the main reason SC didn't play in the BCS title games the last 2 years. The UCLA game exposed him for what he was.....not mobile and no touch on his passes. Yeah he broke his finger against Stanford and the coaches called a TERRIBLE game. But before that game Booty was playing bad and if he couldn't cut it for the Stanford game he should have took himself out or communicated with the coaches so we didn't pass so much.
No one said that JDB was anything but a good kid who represented well. That said, he really has done nothing to justify his hype. Remember, when he first came here, Carroll called him "The future of our program."
Was it his fault that we didn't make the NC game in during the 06 and 07 seasons? No. Blame lack of a running game and poor playcalling in 06, injuries and lack of O Line depth in 07.
That said, JDB ran the system and won games. JDB did the minimum expected of a Trojan QB in the Carroll era: he got them to the Rose Bowl and he lead them the victories over hopelessly overmatched Big Ten Runner-Ups.
But can anyone think of any game where JDB was so overwhelming or clutch that you say "Remember the [blank] game! Booty was so awesome!" Any 4th and 9's? Any 400+ yard Heisman winning performances over Notre Dame? Dominance over UCLA or last second wins? Record smashing games? I mean even Marijuanovich has a signature performance to his name (the UCLA game in 90 or 91?)
All anyone will remember about JDB is 13-9 and the Stanford game. Is it fair? Maybe not, but it's not exactly like he was cursed with freakish injuries or contracted awful disease.
It is what it is: JDB will be remembered as a caretaker/transitional QB, a notch below Trojan QB legends, more like a Rob Johnson than a Pat Hayden, Rodney Peete, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart.
He did the best he could. True. Was it good enough. No? In that sense, he is really no better than Rudy Carpenter or Kellen Clemmons or Nate Longshore or Drew Olson -- decent Pac-10 QB's but not championship material -- and all of whom if put in JDB's position who have fared no better but no worse.
BTW: JDB didn't have a broken finger when he threw a pass right at a Stanford linebacker, who returned it for a TD.
Wow, Ricky, I can't believe you would call a bunch of college kids, who play for you for free, idiots. Even for you that's pretty low.
You pretty much hate everybody, huh? I'm glad I don't know people like you personally.
Booty?
Let's say we give him the benefit of the doubt for...
1) Not informing his coaches regarding the severity
of his finger injury during the Stanford game.
2)His ability or lack of it in being able to throw the long ball.
3) His horrible body language on the sidelines showing lack of support when Mark was doing well (TV cameras see all).
4) Short, flat, high speed passes that turn out badly.
Assuming the above is bogus, no doubt JDB is smart, quite skilled, and was well schooled in the offensive system. However, one question...
Going back 20-30 years or more, can you name just one SC QB that was more gutless than JDB when it came to having to take a hit attempting to make a play or to gain the extra yard?
The absolute antithesis of CP.
Matt Leinart was overhyped give any above-average quarterback talent like White,Bush, Williams, Jarret, Smith,Colbart, and a great defense and they would be great. People overlook that John David Booty was mature and a party boy like Leinart who is not a real football player. Carson Palmer is real, and John David Booty is too. He handle pressure in a good manner following two Heisman winners and missing star power players including another Heisman winner and he did well. He still has two Rose Bowl victories. Also after the 2004 BCS championship if Leinart did not come back Booty could have lead that team againt Texas.

MRSAM:
Leinart had Colbert and Williams one year. Colbert went to the NFL and Williams was declared ineligible by the NCAA. BTW Williams was cut by Kiffin in Oakland>he's done.
Ryan(BC) was drafted first by Atlanta, Flacco(Del.) by Balt., Brian Brohm by GB and Chad Henne by Miami. Ryan and Flacco went in the first rd and the other two in the second rd. This draft is rich with OT's, NT's and WR's plus a few DB's. Add to ALL that JDB's career at USC. You fill-in the blanks. BTW go NFL.com and read his assessment by the NFL scouts. My best bet is he will go in the fourth round with some luck. A commentator from NFL.com said that if you are NOT selected at the end of the 4th. round the player is better off being a free agent. That way the player chooses the best team that fits his talent. There you have it...
