Is "winning" the same as outperforming? Because even if Mustain has a better pre-season it seems like Sanchez will still "win" the starting job.

Sanchez = joke. Can we please stop acting like he should win the starting job because his "experience" is backing up Matt and JDB. I think his famous last comments will be his post Rose Bowl comments, "my last day as a backup". I mean, who says that without proving anything yet! It is not an heir position! I think Dieter Brock should be the starter.

A Dieter Brock reference. Respect.

Isn't Dieter Brock still buried somewhere under Mike Singletary's footprints at Soldier Field?

First of all, great insights with regard to Mark Sanchez. You're very original with your critique, and you seem to have it all figured out.

Second, have you considered petitioning to replace Pete as coach? My advice? Start with Mike Garrett. Clearly Garrett is dissatisfied with PC, and his pitiful lack of success over the last seven years. Then drive a wedge, a la Iago. You've probably got a good shot. Really.

Because clearly your taking pot shots *here* at Sanchez -- based, presumably, primarily on Scott Wolf's own penetrating analysis of the qb competition -- is limiting your efficacy, and the influence your perceptions truly deserve in the world.

Are you trying to reference lago in Othello? This comment makes me
laugh, because are you trying to feel like an intellectual. The joke of it
all is that clearly you haven't seen or heard the play lately. Because
if you would remember one of Iago's famous lines, right there from
Act 1 Scene 1:
"Preferment goes by letter and affection,
And not by old gradation, where each second
Stood heir to the first."

Still not sure why some people hate Sanchez. What has Mustain ever proved? People quote his record, but the fact is Arkansas won in spite of him and that is why he was benched. I believe USC is in goods hands regardless, but both qb's results will pale in comparison to what Leinart did. Leinart was poised and surrounded by supreme talent and had a great offensive coordinator. Any qb now will stuggle with the Sark offense because he is not even in the same league as Chow and even though the offense is talented, it isn't Reggie, Lendale, BMW, Jarrett, Smith, and the great olines of a few years ago.

Enjoy what SC has now, because eventually it will turn into what Florida St. and Miami have unless PC can hire a real innovative OCoordinator.

What was all this sophomoric buildup last year of Mustain by Scott Wolf? And now the QB position is a foregone conclusion, so what does it matter what anybody thinks other than Carroll?
And I would not write-off this SC team just yet. We will never again see the likes of cool Matt Leinart or Reggie Bush around these parts, but preparing for Ohio State early in the season will galvanize this team's efforts to ready itself, and probably expedite the process. And catching the Buckeyes at home is worth at least 6-points (3 for the home team and minus 3 for the road team), which could be all the Trojans require.

Great post, Lawyer John. Unfortunately, many here bit -- hook, line and sinker -- Wolf's sensationalism.

Nothing if not a canny muckraker, Wolf continues to bait the argument by now suggesting that Sanchez and Mustain *both suck.*

Guess what? It ain't true.

On the practice field, the team looks fantastic. Intimidating as can be. Admittedly, Matt, Reggie, LenDale, et al. are now gone. But this -- meaning, now, here in April of 2008 -- is the most talent that Pete has ever had, all at once, on the field.

Oh, and Sanchez and/or Mustain will lead us to ample victories.

That, we can count on.

"Trying to feel like an intellectual," huh?

Actually, I've *re-read* the play within the last six months.

Although it's great you have at least a passing familiarity with Shakespeare, your reference does nothing to undermine the point of my earlier post. That being, it's as ridiculous that you -- in Iago fashion -- could sew seeds of doubt in Mike Garrett's mind about Pete Carroll's efficacy as a coach, as it is that you would doubt PC's wisdom in the decision he is about to make.

Your Othello quote has zero impact for those who don't doubt for a second that -- if indeed he does get the nod -- Sanchez will be chosen due to his "letters," i.e., his merit.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
