Spring analysis

An NFL coach who attended Pro Day offered some observations on USC.
His observations: ``They are average at quarterback, average at wide receiver, the offensive line is young. The defense looks good. The front seven looks strong. The secondary might be an issue.''

Funny, isn't that what these NFL coaches said at last years Pro Day? What else is interesting is that "Agents" are forbinden to get near campus (even though they still snake there way in), yet NFL Coaches (who are there for a Pro Day) can watch and make comments on the current under classmen? Something just doesn't seem to be right with that. Fight On!

unfortunately, tough to really disagree with that.

what bothers me is how highly regarded our receivers were out of high school. PT was a #1 ranked WR right? Vidal was a #1 and Ausberry was up there too. Is USC just bad at developing WRs?

Colbert is a bust
DJ seems to be on the same road
M. William is fat.

so sad. so sad

What's wrong with the secondary? Not many people are fans of the soft zone the coaches have them play but I think the players are solid.

RickyIrvins said:

I don't think there is any problem in the secondary at all..

beyond that though, he's dead on. The QB's are average, I would easily call the WR's below average, and the O-line looks like a bust.

I am sure it is long forgotten by most people but at the end of the Idaho game alot of fans in the colisseum were booing because the Vandals were pushing USC around pretty good. Of course everyone said "well that's our second team scrubs" except those second teamers like heberer and brown and howell are the starters now. And it doesn't matter how many 5 star RB's you have if there is no hole to run through. Expect alot more short dump offs to Havili and slants.

Sep I don't know what the problem is. I remember when Turner came in here he was the most hyped player in the country. Going to be better than Lynn Swann...etc. He has never done anything, neither has Hazelton who also was a huge recruit. And I doubt they ever will. Scott has posted how they have "maxed out" so I am not expecting much. Does our WR coach suck? Didn't we just hire some new guy? Our WR corps is actually kind of a joke, Oregon didn't even bother with them in the game last year they just double covered fred davis.

JDB was a pretty crappy QB, kind of like Joey Harrington was for our Detroit Lions. I am not expecting much out of sanchez or MM, either. Rememeber, MM was benched in Arkansas because he just couldn't grasp the offense and had 9 TD's and 8 INT's. We already saw (ahem) what Sanchez did last year vs. Oregon. AND, "Sark" will be dumbing down the offense because he thinks the QB's "don't have enough experience."

Anyway, as I have posted already I would say we are looking at a 10-3 or 9-4 year. I am currently in a running battle with the delusional posters on www.wearesc.com who, as usual, write about how the USC offensive line is the best in the country and the USC defensive line is the best in the country and the USC coaching staff is the best in the country and we are going to go 13-0 and beat everyone by 55 points and win the NC for the next 9 years in a row..

Upset special: Notre Dame will beat us this year. Jon Tenuta will be throwing all kinds of blitzes at the inexperienced O-line and, like most of our recent RB's, Stafon/Joe/whoever is in there will whiff on the block and sanchez is going to get sacked about 11 times...

Ricky,
Thanks, thanks a lot for bursting my bubble! At least I’ll be able to leave early in the 3rd quarter and beat the crowd to El Cholo for my #5 combination.
I’ll mail you a Jack-In-The-Box taco.

Yeah, all SC receivers suck in the NFL. Steve Smith included, with that Super Bowl ring he earned for playing on the scout team. Wolfie, was the coach an SC alum? We all know Fish and Del Rio are just biding their time until they get a shot at their dream job. Dissin' the current squad isn't gonna make it happen any sooner guys.

I assume he was judging us by NFL standards (i.e. we'd be NFL average at QB, receiver, etc.).

Yeah, ridiculuous comment. I'm sure way out of context or embellished. The LBs and DBs, barring injuries, will be our strongest units in years. This might be our best LB class ever with 4 stud seniors, and with a healthy Pinkard, our DBs are absolutely stellar. D-line and O-line are young, but pass rush should be better. QBs, RBs and WR/TEs are all blue-chippers. We'll start out slow as the O-line and interior D-line gel, but we certainly have the talent to win it all next year. OSU will be a tough win, but as usual, we will likely be playing the best ball in the nation in January. Again, absolutely ridiculous, ignorant comment. Fight on!

News item: Some NFL coach, too gutless to let a reporter use his name to attribute his quotes, tells Scott Wolfie that the Trojans look "average" and there could be some "issues."

News item: USC linebackers Rey Maualuga and Brian Cushing along with safety Taylor Mays were named to the Playboy preseason All-American team.

Reaction: Maybe it's just me, but I'll trust the Playboy football staff (which doesn't mind using its names on the record) over some gutless, spineless "NFL coach" who probably works for the screwed-up Cincinnati Bengals and is looking at the unemployment line soon. Meantime, millions of people will read the Playboy All-America issue and know the real truth.

When you're reading Wolfie's reporting - and especially his blog - keep in mind that he is bucking for a columnist's job (the USC beat bores him to tears these days) and that he'll write anything to stir the pot. A journalist's #1 rule is to not become the news, but poor Scott has never heard of it, or prefers to follow the TJ Simers School of Journalism rules instead.

Have faith, Locoweed,

You'll likely be late to El Chollo, just like the rest of us.

I've only been to one practice this Spring, but my experience last Sunday allayed any concerns I may have had. (Which weren't many, in the first place.)

Matt, Reggie and LenDale are gone, but the depth and breadth of talent and athleticism on display at Howard Jones Field was jaw-dropping.

Actually felt sorry for some of our foes.

Everything's gonna be A-OK. And for years to come.

Ha, ha… don’t worry, in Pete we trust! I was just having a little fun with RickyIrvins. Our friend is marooned out in cold Detroit surviving on a diet of cheese fries and White Castle Slyders; obviously he’s one taco short of a combination plate. Nothing a bit of California sunshine, a visit to Howard Jones field, and dinner at El Cholo couldn’t fix, but the poor schlimazel can only dream.
We are so incredibly lucky out here “livin’ the California dream,” just look outside today!

Last year I recall one of the NFL scouts saying our defensive line was below average. I wonder if he was a scout for a team positioned to draft Lojack or Sed?
