Tackle vs. Guard

| | Comments (4) |

Why is it better to play offensive tackle than offensive guard. According to nfldraftscout.com, Chilo Rachal is the third-best guard in the draft. Sam Baker is the sixth-best tackle.
But Baker is projected as a second-round pick while Rachal is considered a third-round pick.

This is why Michael Lewis' "The Blind Side" is required reading for serious football fans. Hint: thank Bill Parcels, Lawrence Taylor, Bill Walsh, Bubba Paris, and Steve Wallace.

Just ordered Blind Side, thanks Bosco. Still amazing to me that Chilo is 3rd best guard. I was sure that he made a mistake when announcing, would be a 6th or 7th round pick, and be lucky to make a team. Of course, he still may have that problem, but NFL scout performances have apparently been impressive. I honestly didn't know he was that good. With that in mind, it really is amazing what an incredible O-line we fielded last year, and even though we were racked with injuries, we still didn't dominate like we should have given the talent of the line on paper. Hate to be a downer, but our very, very green O-line may really struggle this year, which would result in a shutdown of the whole offense regardless of the QB and RB. This makes the replacement of Sedrick in the middle of the line so critical so that other teams can't ball control run on us. This team could go undefeated, or lose 3 or 4 games.

Because edge players are left alone more and do not have as much support. The less support you require the more valuable you become. A corner is more valuable when they do not need a safety's help. OLB's are more valuable than MLB's because they are required to make more tackles in space. Tackles do not have the support of a center who can double a tackle/nose when there is no blitzer in the middle. A tackle is alos more valuable on the left not only because it is the blind side but over two thirds of the time a tight end lines up on the right which alters a LDE's rush pattern.
